My 3tb device toshiba canvio in use for the lat three months as backup device stopped working. I tried to look at the device manager and driver updates. The device is not recognized. It shows that the device is Hitachi HDDs5c30 sata bridge 2.0 which absolute gibberish as the device is Toshiba. I tried the following after watching you tube

Cooling the device in the freezer!!!
Tried ubuntu
innumerable driver update efforts.

It is frustrating please help. I am a non tech guy 62 yrs old

The freezer will leave water on the surface platters and this is very very bad idea to do this one. Cooling the drive by means of a fan is how it is normally done. Freezing the drive is not how it is done. Right now your drive has some errors on this one that need to be repaired by the use of professional tools. It is possible that you could do this one but I am sure from what I read that the skills and tools are not available to you. I would agree at this point that your best chance to find your data again is by a professional DR company. I am very sorry to say this one. I hope and wish you luck on this one. If you need help in your area to find one we can give you some suggestions if you ask.

Thanks very much for the advise. I do not have the requisite skills to handle this device although I can do simple things like mounting a hard drive on the desk top, replacing a sound card and so on which are basically open and shut skills.

As my desk top recognized the HDD as Hitachi I thought it was a software malfunction. My computer had some access to the device which i give below verbatim

USB 2.00 SATA BRIDGE

Before the device failure IT USED TO BE

external usb 3.00

Also the currently the computer ecognizes the device as" HITACHI hds5c3020ble" whereas the device is of Toshiba 3.00 convio make.

Kindly look into this info. I am willing to invest some money on the tools to do it myself. The reason I dont want to approach any body else is it has very very confidential data which I dont want a third party access.
Thanks once again
sincerely
abbas

You are saying that your data is valuable to you but you still will not send it to a DR company to fix this problem. I will say this at any DR company we are strict on privacy and the data of our clients. I personally work for the Government and law enforcement here on the islands. I know I am not the only one who handles data such as this. Most all DR companies handle this sort of data. I think your data is more than safe with a DR company. I can recommand one out of Florida to send this drive there if your data is important to you.

I agree, if you trust a reputable firm then you have nothing to worry about the confidentiality of your data.

You will sign agreements and all.

To be honest, we almost never look at the data. We just test a few files to confirm that they actually work.

My Friends thanks very much for the advice on this sensitive topic. I will surely approach a DR center here in Long Island which I believe also does some work for the govt. Thanks very much again.
