HD080HJ PCB swap question

Hello

I have read from this forum that some hdds require swapping rom chip when doing pcb swap. Does that my Samsung HD080HJ need this or doesn't it?

I accidentally killed it by swapping 12v and 5v wires. I did a fan mod from 12v to 5v and didn't check that much it before plugging in.

Would switching the pcb work?

You might get away without changing the PCB at all.

The problem might well be blown fuse and/or TVS diode(s).

Take the PCB off and post a photo of the component side.

are you used welders, and hot air welders before?

if yes probably get data, if not maybe loose data. If data important to you contact with a pro maybe you get data for a 50$ quotation

Just below the SATA Power connector
The two fuse ( marked 000)
The two TVS diodes(one is marked LEM)
And two inductors.

What is the current condition of the drive ?
Does the PC power up when the drive is connected ?
(If the TVS is failed, it won't allow the system to power up)

I accidentally killed it by swapping 12v and 5v wires.

There are chances that the VCM(& somtimes MCU) might have failed too.
Check if these IC's are getting abnormally Hot.

Also the ROM is not external. Swapping MCU is not DIY

If data is important , its safe to take pro help ,
and if its only PCB fault it shouldn't cost you much.

When I plug it it it doesn't do anything. Doesn't spin up.

Tomorrow I'll get another same hdd then I'll swap pcb-s and then we'll see.

I changed pcb and it just clicks for about 10 seconds and then shuts off. Bios doesn't see it.

Changing pcb will not help.
Most likely pre-amp is gone too. If you can't fix the damaged pcb you will not be able to move ROM to new pcb too, as it's embeded on mcu.
If you need the data send the drive to a pro.

@Kaar3l, measure the resistances of the two TVS diodes (marking "QE" and "LEM"), plus the two zero-ohm resistors ("000").

If the 5V diode (QE) is shorted, then remove it. If the resistor below it is shorted, then flow a blob of solder over it.

If you have a multimeter, we can then measure some voltage test points before you install the board on your drive.

Contacted professional and got a price and it was astronomical.



Then I measured both the broken drive TVS diodes and new drive diodes and I think the problem was the 5V TVS. But I changed all of them there where the voltage comes in.


So my replaced parts are marked in red polygon.
