Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

Hi all,
In the last few weeks I've had 4 WD drives (Elements) in for recovery, 500GBs or 1TBs, USB 2 and 3. Having the same issue with all, they will come ready and ID. Apart from having a few bad areas, they image horribly slowly on DDI 4 USB add on.
PIO with a small block size, any and all settings, and it will read for half a second, then pause for about 2 seconds, read for half a second, then pause for 2 seconds etc. This reads about 3,000 LBAs at a time and will take ages to finish.
Done solve slow responding fix on PC3K with no effect. Apart from migrating to a SATA PCB can you offer any advice please?
Thanks in advance.

What's wrong with migrating to a SATA PCB?

Try [ctrl]+[n] and check "Initialize Read" and see if that helps.

To be honest, we have resorted back to SATA conversion due to similar problems with imaging via USB.
Although the DDI add-on copes well with most drives, it does not do so well once a head exchange has been done.
It's easy enough and takes 10 minutes to convert to SATA

I was hoping there was some tweaking that could be done in order to get these (WD) to read better in their native state. Samsung USBs seem to image really well, almost like a SATA, but these WDs don't play nice.
Luke, I tried that option, but it didn't help. Thanks for suggestion though.
Will move them over to SATA, thanks for the input.

Are you sure those WD drives are not suffering from the "slow issue" (relo list) problem ?

Seems to be similar to my case:
viewtopic.php?t=25749&f=1&start=0#p174537In my case was a head faulty, which happened after a power surge.

Ok. So it's "another thing" .
Hope that you manage to fix it.

Didn't have stock of compatible SATA PCB, have ordered, will see how it images when on SATA when PCB gets here.

Yes, and i think hot swap might help too, if it's possible to do so on that drive.
