I want to know if anyone can tell me what legislation or accreditation I would need to set up a data recovery business?

it seems people are just setting DR business and have no legal backup?

any tips or redirection would be amazing

Do you need legal backup? I don't know for UK but here in Sweden you can work with who ever you want.
And for legal things we always use an NDA for those who needs it.
I also believe that with more important employers you must earn trust, and you only earn trust from a good work.

Many people who start DR businesses WITHOUT knowing exactly what to do learn the hard way and faster than you think how can it be if things go wrong - just a matter of time.

So said, insurance is highly recommended, but don't get exactly what you mean for "legal backup".
You mean if you add forensic services ... ?

Sadly there is no official accreditation, which does make it easy for any Tom, Dick or Harry to setup as a "data recovery expert".

We get 90% of our business from repeat business or recommendation.

As far as legal backup goes, there nothing specific as far as I know. But as mr_spokk says NDA's are sometimes required which we don't have a problem with signing.

The police and other government bodies trust us with their data and our premises and facilities have been inspected and approved.

With good results and professional service comes trust

If you want to have "a legal backup" you need 2 things
1. A contract that a client must sign before you take the job
2. A process to handle data and storage devices. A process should insure that you can handle client's data and won't do any primary or secondary harm to your client by doing what you do. That usually includes decent security of the building, entrance control, careful process of the recovery: including shipping, the recovery itself, handling the data inside and outside your facility and payment.
I think a good DR company should have a bank-class security

I don't think you'll get much of the details of a process here
But I think it is possible to get an audit from a security company


But on the other hand, if you are "Tom, Dick or Harry" working in your garage - you don't need all that
