Needed: IBM firmware for Hitachi hdd

July 24th, 2013, 10:47

I am trying to get 12 HGST HUS723030ALS64 drives to work in a IBM EXP3512 drive array. IBM Tech has check array and it works properly. He brought a IBM drive with part number # 81Y9890 on it.
Here are all the numbers:

Drive specs: 3 TB 7200 RPM 6GB SAS
Option # 81Y9886
FRU # 81Y9878
IBM Part # 81Y9890

OTHER #’S
Model # HUS723030ALS640
WWN # 5000CCA03E9E43B8
PART # 0B26318

Looked up that model # it’s a

Hitachi GST Ultrastar 7K3000 HUS723030ALS640 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SAS 6Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

So.... I ordered 12 of this Hitachi drives. Array shows them as unsupported. The only thing I can think of is the firmware.

Ideas??

Shane

http://public.dhe.ibm.com/common/ssi/ecm/en/tsd03124usen/TSD03124USEN.PDF :
Supported drives
6 Gbps SAS 3.5-inch drives:
300 GB, 450 GB and 600 GB 15k rpm
2 TB and 3 TB 7.2k rpm nearline

6 Gbps SAS 2.5-inch drives:
146 GB 15k rpm
300 GB 10k rpm
300 GB 15k rpm
600 GB 10k rpm
900 GB 10k rpm
1 TB 7.2k rpm nearline
300 GB 10k rpm SEDSolid-state SAS 2.5-inch drives*:
200 GB and 400 GB SSD

is the HGST Drive "nearline"?
http://www.hgst.com/hard-drives/enterprise-hard-drives/enterprise-sata-drives/ultrastar-7k3000
has a compatability sheet.

I dont know alot about these big storage thingos, but maybe find out what the hell "nearline" is and if the Hitachi drive is one, because I couldnt see it mentioned on the drive spec sheet.

I just got a Dell server with a PowerVault RD1000 removable disc drive unit and some few "cartridges" for backup. I thought I was getting 6 1Tb HDDs.. these cartridges appear to have actual laptop HDDs in them, great I love learning about new crap I dont care about a whole lot.
