WD20EARS-00MVWB0 0 byte after PCB swap

July 13th, 2013, 12:18

Hello,
i've these WD drive:
Model: WD20EARS-00MVWB0
FW: 51.0AB51
PCB: 2060-771698-002
MCU: 88i19146-TFJ2

After power surge, the SMOOTH controller chip burned and 5V TVS diode shorted.
I got a good donor PCB (same number and same MCU) and did ROM transfer with eeprom programmer successfully, but the drive is detect as "0 byte".
Bios detects it as WD20EARS-00MVWB0 but with 0 byte.

I can't access to SA mods with WDR and 2 rom mods seems to be corrupted, see the screen:
WD20EARS-00MVWB0.JPG

As you can see WDR returns error on mods 5A and 5B

Here the ROM and ROM mods backup:
WD20EARS-00MVWB0.rar
(253.99 KiB) Downloaded 325 times

I also flashed the ROM chip with the one inside these archive:
http://files.hddguru.com/download/PC-30 ... 2REVP2.rar

still can't access into SA.
Can you help me please? thx.

If you have a good compatible donor, try hotswap to access SA

I never did hot swap. I read somewhere (i don't remember where) that i need to copy some mods from patient drive to donor drive, am i right?
If is so, how can i do it if i don't have any access into SA patient drive?

Yes, i have the original rom of donor pcb.
But with original rom i should have access to SA mods, am i right?
It's really possible to regen adaptives if SA isn't loaded?

If original ROM was damaged, it would not power and not ID. Its possible some ROM modules have corrupted content, but until you rule out other issues this cant be confirmed.

This is Sadle G6, these are a pain in the a** :D

You dont need to write modules to hotswap, only for data access after hotswap you need modules written. After re-calibration, dont write anything because SA modules map varies between models. But you should be able to read some SA, probably best option is to read tracks if possible.

Dont take advice to regen anything until you have managed to make a full backup of all SA/ROM.

The faulty drive has fw 51.0AB51, donor has fw 20.P
I did hot swap, but still i can't access to SA.

Is this due to incompatible firmware drive?
Still can't detect the serial number and it says XYZ

Hot swap doesn't help to access SA and i still get 0 byte and no serial is show (XYZ).
I download this:
http://files.hddguru.com/download/PC-30 ... 2REVP2.rar

and flashed the rom to my pcb, still not have any access to SA and can't read any tracks.
I push repair button to fix adaptivs but i get error.
My original ROM is not corrupted, maybe adaptives are corrupted but i really don't know.
With the rom i downloaded i should get access to SA because adaptives should be good.

What is the real problem with this drive?
