 Post subject: WD Elements SE 1To USB 3.0 Problem

Hi everyone,
im new in this forum, so my problem is that my hard disk not working.
it's a WD10TMVV-11ZSMS5 August 2011

- it's an USB 3.0
- the disk is power on and spining.
- the drive is detected in windows manager as WDElements 1042 after 2min and a bip sound.
- after another 2min an another bip sound but no disk
- in disk management the disk come with "Offline state" and no way to initialisate the hard disk.

what can i do ??
does another PCB will work ?? (i dont have encryption) if yes it must be the same ??
how can i recover my data lost (2 years of work)

Hi,

Windows is just detecting the USB bridge, not the drive itself.
Have you tried on another computer and with another USB cable just to be sure if the problem is not elsewhere?

If the problem is really on the drive, I think it's not so easy as that for an unexperienced guy.
If your data is important you should get a proper diagnosis with a professional.

yes i have trying with another computer, another cable
and tried the PCB of the WD10TMVV-11TK7S1 that is the same but is a USB 2.0
the disk is detect fastest but showing wrong information (2To) and can't be initialised too :/
- i m looking for the same PCB "WD10TMVV-11ZSMS5" in refurbished WD elements, hope the PCB will work.
the problem is that in my country, there no professional in hard disk recovery ...
i have skills in soldering.
just tell me what i can do.

Well, you still have the option to ship the drive into another country and find a pro to do the work, if your data is valuable.

If not, you can try to convert your USB PCB into SATA mode, to check if there's any difference on what happens.
You can find instructions for that here on the forum.

It can be a lot of different issues on those drives, key sector not readable, FW problems, failing heads, etc.

yes i will try the USB to SATA mode.

can i flash the FW again ini this hard disk model?
there si no firmware available in the Western Digital website.

Hi,

If your goal is to recover data, you can't and don't need to flash any firmware.
Best thing is not to mess with any firmware, or else you'll probably loose your data.

just for information
since 4 months, i have problem when the disk go to sleep mode. I had always to returns it to wake up.

I finally found an old hard drive that I had sold and I could retrieve some data.

just for information, i want to buy another external portable hard disk, what could be the best choice ???

Nice you solved your problem.

My choice is any external drive! And my choice is make some backups!
