WD head stack replacement compatibility

November 19th, 2013, 10:59

Hey everybody I had to create a new forum account...

Failed drive: wd5000aavs-00ztb0 DARCHT2CGB Thailand 02/28/2008
Donor drive: wd5000aavs-00ztb0 DARCHTJABB Thailand 04/25/2008

The failed drive was new in late 2009 and used about 10 hours. It was shutdown clean and heads parked on loading ramp when dropped four feet onto asphalt. Sliders/heads were loose inside case when opened in lab.

I have performed about 90 mechanical/open recoveries resulting in about 80 complete recoveries plus a few partials.

Drive DCM seems rare and it returns zero results in search engines. This donor is the closest we have found in a year. If there is a more suitable donor, please advise.

Thank you!

DCM has little relevance here, you cannot determine head compatibility on ROYL based on DCM

Agree, that donor should be fine.

There will be underlying issues no doubt though :-(

@DefinityComm
DCM is the least of issues with regard to challenges in the next recovery steps, if you will, because there are high chances the swap will not work. Matter of fact, it is possible that any other of those donors could be more compatible. One can't precisely say for sure as there are other factors involved. But, like Jignesh said, maybe d2 is the one to try first, I guess..

:? this is where i get all confused, i have been reading that DCM is not important, i have been reading that "any other donor could be more compatible" Check the head map, so much info.

I have a question :?: if I swap the donor heads to the hdd that i want to fix and the drive i want to fix clicks and doesn't work that means? heads incompatible? the PCB is fine btw.

And lets say i take those heads again and place them on the donor drive again and my donor drives works, that means i need to search for a new donor drive?

Does the heads need to locate the SA right away after a head replacement????

Thanks

This Zeus - 8 heads.
The probability that once fit 8 heads is extremely low.
Need to determine which head is defective.
Subtract data intact heads.
Finish several donors on poor heads.

Nor any external information on the labels does not guarantee that the head will fit.
Set of all important features and parameters.
That transpire through trial and error.

His drive is Spider, not Zeus.

Sometimes DCM matters; sometimes it doesn't. There is more to matching heads than reading labels.
