Hi all

First post here, so please be gentle :)

We have had a few storms in Scotland over the past week, and it would appear that we had a power surge that has pretty much killed two internal and one external hard drive. External is fine as I just removed the drive from the WD casing and hooked it up as another internal drive. However!! One of my internal drives that I use for backing up is completely dead.

Changed the leads around and still nothing
Checked the PCB, no obvious signs of burning
Removed the Fuse Diode and the PCB/Drive is now making a very quiet bzzzzzzz sound, but from no where near the 'spindle'
Drive is not spinning at all.

Now I need another PCB so I can get the data off the drive as it is very important photographs. Does anyone know where I can get another PCB from for a ST500DM002 with Firmware JC48 from in the UK?

Any help appreciated

Thanks, all over Ebay and have asked a few sellers to ensure their drive pictured is correct as it has same Firmware. Fingers crossed changing the PCB over alone will do the job, don't much fancy changing the platters over

Changing the PCB alone will definitely NOT work on this drive, you'll at least need to. I've the ROM over, it has 100% unique data in it for your drive.

Do not even think about switching platters, it will not work and would serve no purpose.

Suggest you contact member "buster80", he's in Glasgow and very reputable.

Also, very likely bzzzzzzz sound means that the problem might be also inside the drives (no DIY case).
I'm pretty sure that after replacing the pcb, despite the ROM transfer, hard drives will continue to emit the bzzzzzzz sound because of internal damage (very likely heads)

If you can post an image of the PCB we will know more about the drive you are talking about. But the chances are that a ROM chip will need to be transfered to read the drive again. But first, see if the drive spins with the new PCB then if it does, having a electric shop move the ROM chip should be easy.

DO NOT OPEN THE DRIVE ITSELF, you will contaminate the delicate components inside the render the drive useless. This will cost a lot to repair with a pro.
