New to this website and the whole posting questions etc. So if i have done something wrong or put this in wrong place please let me know.

To cut a long story short i am trying to identify or get clarity on exactly which chip is the rom that needs to be moved to another donor pcb for attempted data recovery.

I am assuming it is the 8 pin based on what i have read, but would just like to get a experts opinion. after all we are talking about data.

there is another ATMEL chip aswell which from googling seems to be some form of rom. maybe a cache as it is labelled 1024, which might mean 1mb

AIUI, that model doesn't require a "ROM" transfer. You only need to match the firmware.

To answer your question, the Atmel AT49LV1024 device is a parallel EEPROM.

The 8-pin chip is something else (not a memory chip). A legible marking would help to identify it.

if i was to find a donor pcb but without the same firmware how am i to transfer the firmware. unless that 8 pin is the firmware chip.

because this drive is older they are harder to find. found a couple on ebay but different firmware i think or didnt list it.

the small 8 pin chip has some markings but hard to read. possibly reads as "03AF LM393M"

If you have difficulties to read the markings,get yourself a magnifier

I think the LM chips are power regulator chips but easy to google the numbers

im now assuming then, based on my pic the rom chip is integrated into the main mcu. based on what fzabkar said that i dont need to transfer rom only match the firmware.

i am now looking for a replacement pcb with firmware 3.21 and the pcb board no is 005451-001 Rev A

i am in australia, i am waiting on another pcb for a different drive to come from drivestar.biz. they do not have a pcb for me for this job.

if anyone has one or can point me in the direction it would be much appreciated. who are the major pcb dealers that the hdd community source from?
