Sounds like a damaged head scratching the platters. Is it laptop drive or desktop?

After one second of hearing that you should have opened the drive to see the damage. Not played with it on terminal. If the heads turn to dust the terminal doesn't really help.

ShaneWard, its a desktop drive. ST31000340AS

thatdellguy, too late for that as the customer has already had it humming away. she originally played the sound to me over phone. dont have a portable clean room at all either.

if there is any hope left i was going to escalate it to a data recovery pro. but i have let the customer know that it will probably be costly.

FUBAR to me too.

Or very expensive and maybe partial recovery only possible.
