I plugged in the wrong power supply into my Western Digital External Hard Drive and it stopped working.
The HD is WD10EADS - 00M280
I bought a SATA dock to give it a shot and it also doesn't work. The light just blinks. There are no sounds from the hard drive.

I just need it to work for about 15 -30 minutes or so to copy several very important files.

Currently, I am unable to provide pictures as I am waiting on my Torx screwdriver to arrive. I will also test it with multimeter as soon as I was able to open the hard drive up.

I read a lot posts in the forum that seems to indicate snipping out D4 component will allow the hard drive to function normally again and wondering if this will remedy my situation?

Thanks.

These are the components you should check:
http://www.users.on.net/~fzabkar/HDD/bi ... diodes.jpg

If you've switched the +5V and +12V supplies, then D3 is most probably shorted. If the corresponding resistor is open (R67), then the preamp may not have survived.

If you've overvolted the +12V supply, then D4 would be shorted. If R64 is open, then the motor controller (SMOOTH ?) may not have survived.

If there is an 8-pin chip at U12, then you could try a board swap plus firmware transfer. onepcbsolution and hdd-parts.com will include a firmware transfer. Total cost is US$50.
