Yesterday, My DiamondMax Plus 9 160GB ATA/133 HDD 's W503 IC suddenly burnt out! So i replace a good W503 IC again from another HD (DiamondMax Plus 9 80GB), The result is the same. The W503 IC burnt out too....>.<
So is it possible to use another DiamondMax Plus 9 HDD PCB to re-drive the 160GB again??
Here is some information:

You have an internal components problem...mostly short circuit from the amplifier. Changing the PCB will not help, it will always burnt again. You need to open the HDD cover in a clean room to replace the preamplifier or other components that might have failed internally.

Opp!! What you mean is that the problem is not the PCB problem.
Is there any method to check whether it's short circuit somewhere??
or my harddisk is most likely unable to be repaired?

Yes there is a method. Remove the PCB. You will see the HDA data pins...
Check its resitance one by one. Compare the result with identical drive that is working OK.
You will see the difference.

Thanks! I'm measuring it now.
I find there are 4 groups (9/3/4/2-pin)
I have found there are some difference already.
(especially 2 of them are short-circuit, which should not be in the good one)
But just have no idea on what the pins mean.....
And any followup after i check the resistance??

These pins are +/- 5 V power supply for the circuit on HDA

Hi,
From the first description it is not neccessarily a preamp failure, though it can be.
It is possible that Q500 doesn't get proper driving signal from U500 at pin4.
In this case U can replace the PCB with a compatible one, and it will work, but if the preamp is gone, don't try a good PCB, it will be toasted too.

I do have a good and compatible Maxtor PCB to have a test whether it works or not. But i'm afraid the good PCB will be dead too after test >.<. (fear to try it now)
Is there any test to confirm it is the PREAMP failure?
like measuring which HDA pins or any methods are welcomed.

U can check the preamp with a multimeter, put it into diode checking mode.
Attach the red (positive) terminal to the GND pin and the black (negative) one to the -5V pin.
If the multimeter shows any value other than infinity, the preamp is gone. If it shows bellow ~1.000 the new board will be damaged probably if U try it.

I follow your instructon to check with some photos for reference.
First, do i do the test correctly??
And i find it's infinity, does it mean it is a good news, and i can try to replace a good PCB?
P.S. I'm waiting the IRF7326D2 IC delivery to replace the burnt W503 IC.

I got "infinity" result again. is the preamp still fine?
But i test a 80GB HDD, it takes 1.340 result.

The IRF7326D2 IC is just received, and will have a test again after soldering.

Before i test with a new and good PCB, Anyone can answer me this question?
Here is the history:
I stupidly connect the harddisk 4-pin power cable in reverse direction.
In other words, 5V->12V and 12V->5V.
Initially nothing happened. When i noticed i mis-connected the power cable, i re-plug the power cable again (within 1 min).
Then i turn on the PC again, the W503 IC burnt!
So i would like to ask whether the wrong power cable connection can cause the pre-amp dead?

What's with these Maxtor drives?? I have a Platinum 160GB ATA133 HDD with Calypso PCB and the PCB fried as well. Seems too much of a co-incidence...
