After installing xp on 2nd disk unable to boot from Win 7

March 22nd, 2014, 17:36

I have PC3000 Flash with SSD on one disk (Windows 7). On a second disk I have installed winxp so that I will be able to install Sediv. But, after installing the XP, Windows 7 is not starting. Everything goes well till the boot menu (winxp and unknown operating system), but, when I choose winxp, the computer starts well; but, when I choose Win7, I get one strange character at the top left corner and the computer sort of hungs. If I press enter the boot menu comes back.

Can someone please help. I really do not want to go through the whole installation and activation processes again.

Herebelow are partition sector-zero, and the first four disk sectors;

Re: After installing xp on 2nd disk unable to boot from Win

March 22nd, 2014, 17:58

Have you made sure the win7 disk is marked active?
IIRC you go into diskpart:

Code:
c:\>Diskpart
diskpart>

then select the disk, the win partition and mark it active

Code:
sel disk 0
sel part 1
active

obviously you would choose the correct disk and partition. you can list them with "list"

you may need to re-write the boot files:
Code:
c:\windows\system32\bcdboot.exe d:\windows
where d:\windows is the disk and install path of win7.
you typically do this through a win7 PE bootdisk. If you need I can send you an ISO of a bootdisk.

Re: After installing xp on 2nd disk unable to boot from Win

I suspect that Windows XP may have modified your Windows 7 boot sector(s) by inserting its own NTLDR code. I'm currently dual booting Win98SE and Win XP. I first installed Win98SE then added XP some time later.

I now have the following hidden files in Win98SE's root directory:

Code:
NTLDR              250,032  08-04-04 12:00p NTLDR
NTDETECT COM        47,564  08-04-04 12:00p NTDETECT.COM

Here is the tail end of the modified Win98SE boot sector:

Code:

If WinXP has done a similar thing in your case, then I wonder if you could undo it simply by restoring the original boot sector(s).

Your partition table in sector 0 indicates that there are boot sectors at 0x800, 0xF9D000, and 0x1F39000.

There is an EBR at 0x20781000.

The partition beginning at sector 0xF9D000 is marked active. Therefore I would start looking there.

Hi HaQue/ fzabkar,

Thank you for your help. I shall try it and let you know.

HaQue,

Please send me the ISO of the bootdisk. I shall pm my email.

Thanks

Re: After installing xp on 2nd disk unable to boot from Win

March 23rd, 2014, 9:15

As is already mentioned by fzabkar, what happened is that winxp modified the MBR and made the Master Boot Code to load winxpºs bootloader. Normally when Windows 7 is installed last, it does the same thing but includes the winxp installation in the boot menu. But, older operating systems, just replace the boot loader and do nothing about the other operating system.

I have found two methods to rectify the problem:

1/ using the freeware utility EasyBCD

2/ Using a manual method. Please check the link below

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/maga ... 51681.aspx

Problem is rectified using the first method.

Thank you HaQue and fzabkar..

My MBR code was also changed, but I can't see how this would have affected anything.

AIUI, the MBR code merely identifies the active partition, loads the partition's boot sector into memory, and then transfers control to it. It's the code in the boot sector that is the problem, AFAICS.

Microsoft's tech note specifies the following command to repair the damage:

d:\boot\bootsect.exe /nt60 all

The following article explains the BootSect command-line options:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/libr ... 77(v=ws.10).aspx

"Bootsect.exe updates the master boot code for hard disk partitions to switch between BOOTMGR and NTLDR. You can use this tool to restore the boot sector on your computer."

/nt60 - Applies the master boot code that is compatible with BOOTMGR

ALL - this option updates the boot code on volumes that can be used as Windows boot volumes

IIUC, bootsect.exe does not touch the Master Boot Record (MBR), but updates all suitable boot sectors, ie Volume Boot Records. Therefore the term "master boot code" as used by Microsoft is ambiguous and misleading.

I suspect that if you reexamine sector 0, you will still find a Windows XP MBR.

Re: After installing xp on 2nd disk unable to boot from Win

March 24th, 2014, 4:01

As is explained below, the MBR code reads the partition table and executes the boot code in the active partition. What Winxp did is it changed the active partition. On the other hand, when Win7 is installed last, instead of changing the active partition, it inserts a boot menu code in the MBR, that enables the user to choose the active partition, during start up.

The problem emanets because Winxp fails to insert a bootmenu code (in the MBR) when the first operating system installed is Win7. I do not think this problem occurs when both operating systems are Winxpºs.
