Hi. Fred I would start with a free utility like Mhdd or Victoria.
First check the smart attributes to help diagnose the drive condition. If you are unsure of the results you could post a screenshot in this thread.
Then I would scan the surface media with the remap option enabled. After this I would run the Hard disk wipe tool and see if you still have an internal error.

Hi Dick,
Apologies for my previous post...I'm a bit tired misread what you wre saying...Checked the smart attribues there were about three items showing as unknown. As for the surface scan, as that will take some time I will do it later on today. Rhpa and current are same. Drive is showing under PCI Controllers not sure if that is right?
MHDD saved Scrn shot to log, but haven't found where its been put? something else for later on today.
Config of drive states: Drive does not support Device configuration Overlay, not sure if that is relevant?
Once again my apologies for being a bit dumb and thanks again for your assistance
Kind regards
John

Hi,
Don't worry about the unknown entries.
I think you are ready to go with the scan with remap option enabled.

Just one thing would be the Hpa overlay if there is one.
What make and model of drive do you have and how many lba is it showing?

If there is an overlay you need to remove it first. I often use Victoria for Windows to remove it. Then run the scan with remap set to 250 or 240 in Mhdd.

Hi Dick,

Drive is Segate 320GB ST3320620AS: Mhdd says LBA is 625142448: Cache 16384: size 305245mb ?
Not sure if there is a HPA : Mhdd Config says Drive does not support Device configuration Overlay.
MHDD also reports Auto detect is not enabled but haven't worked out yet how to view MHDD.config file to adjust settings, all i get from config is, as above.
Believe problem caused by bug(whatever) creating an overlay! but as i have said my knowledge is very limited!
Will down load Victoria. but will wait for you to confirm to proceed before doing anything.
Many thanks for your assisance
Fred

Lba is correct so I think you are ready to go with the scan with remap.

Mind you the following smart attributes don't look that healthy.
Quote:
001 Read error rate 114 95 65377023
007 Seek Error Rate 87 60 479400236
195 Hardware ECC Recovered 90 51 31797304

You don't really have anything to lose by continuing but bear in mind you have an old drive which has had many hours of use so unless it is properly refurbished it might never be a reliable drive.

Yes run Victoria with remap set to 250 and allow the scan to complete.
