I believe that WD My Book Essential 1TB (WDBAAF0010HBK) has this built-in drive encryption which will prevent you to access the data from that drive if you try to put it on another enclosure or if you connect it directly to your PC's motherboard. I think all you need is to fix or find a replacement of that broken USB PCB interface for your data to be recovered.

Frozwire is right!
My Book Essential have hardware encryption builded inside the sata/usb converter board, if this board is broken you need a new one (or repair the original one you have).
Are you sure that the sata/usb board is broken?
Do you see burned area, or smell of burned parts?

It's also possible that the Essential power supply is faulty.
There may be also a issue in the drive.

First i would check with MHDD if sectors are good, if so i will check firmware with Sediv.
