Good morning/afternoon/evening Everyone,

This may take 2 posts to complete the presentation of the problem.

I am in the process of renovating my landlord's computer which has a Samsung SP0411N/R TW100-13 IDE 40GB hard drive.

It has Windows XP Professional installed and initially the OS (Operating System) couldn't start because the Windows directory could not be detected. Also, the BIOS reports that the Hard Drive is "Ultra DMA Mode-5, S.M.A.R.T. Capable but Command Failed". The Motherboard is a PC Chips P21G V3.1 with AMIBIOS(C)2005 American Megatrends, Inc. Version 8.00.12.

The following is my diagnostic history.

Using GParted Live on a USB Flash drive to Boot the PC I was able to obtain the following details.

Code:
Check and repair file system (ntfs) on /dev/sda1  00:00:01    ( ERROR )

calibrate /dev/sda1  00:00:00    ( SUCCESS )

path: /dev/sda1
start: 63
end: 32772599
size: 32772537 (15.63 GiB)
check file system on /dev/sda1 for errors and (if possible) fix them  00:00:01    ( ERROR )

Filesystem check failed! Totally 30 cluster accounting mismatches.
ERROR: NTFS is inconsistent. Run chkdsk /f on Windows then reboot it TWICE!
The usage of the /f parameter is very IMPORTANT! No modification was
and will be made to NTFS by this software until it gets repaired.

Some of the information I found on the Internet, however, indicates that "chkdsk /f" can sometimes make things worse.

Using the ntfsfix utility, which is included with GParted Live, the following information was obtained.

Code:
ntfsfix /dev/sda1
Mounting volume... OK
Processing of $MFT and $MFTMirr completed successfully.
Checking the alternate boot sector... OK
NTFS volume version is 3.1.
NTFS partition /dev/sda1 was processed successfully.

Using the testdisk utility, which is also included with GParted Live, the following was obtained.

Code:

So, I posted the above on the Windows XP Forum and was advised to use "chkdsk /r" which I did after transferring the drive to my own PC and received the following results.

Thanks to this site I was able to get version 2.10 of Hutil and things don't appear good.

Auto Detection correctly identifies the Motherboard Controller (VIA VT82C571) and the Drive model.

Using the various Menu Items, except "ERASE HDD" produces the following.

Code:
Option
  Drive Information
    Error : MCFS Fail

  Partition Info
    Error : MCFS Fail

Tool
  Set Max UDMA Mode
    Error : MCFS Fail

  Automatic Acoustic Management
    Error : MCFS Fail

  Self Diagnostic
    Test Loop Count Number
         1

The Test Loop Count Number is Stationary on 1.

Does "MCFS Fail" equate to "Maintenance/Cylinder Read Failure"? What does this indicate exactly?

The drive doesn't appear to be making any noises that indicate there is something mechanically wrong with it.

What is an acceptable amount of space used by bad sectors?

Are there any other utilities I can use to get an accurate health report for this drive?

Are there any other utilities I can use to pinpoint and view the bad sectors?

Thanks, Michael.

What is Simpomts? There is no such word in the English language.

hhddrec wrote:

The above information has already been provided.

Hi, the word "Simpomts" should be Symptoms. It means, what behaviour is it displaying, what do you see happening. A Symptom of influenza virus is a cough, another Symptom is a runny nose etc etc.

IMHO you are going to now NEED to re-install Windows XP. You should first take an image/clone of it so anything you do cannot destroy needed files.

Then, re-install XP.

You say you want to renovate it. What do you mean by that? Make it faster? more secure? Fix issues? IMHO I would install at least Windows 7. Any programs your Landlord had will probably need to be re-installed.

When chkdsk starts showing errors, usually you will see things crash, most often not easily manuall fixable. If you are worried about the HDD health, get another one. Don't spend hours/days/weeks trying to fix a broken XP OS installation, it will drive you mad and you will always doubt you got to everything that is wrong

Hi HaQue/hhddrec,

@HaQue - I know what symptoms are mate. ;) I have had too many late nights/early mornings to be able to decipher what hhddrec was trying to say to realise he had made a typographical error also.

[Off Topic - @HaQue]
Adelaide eh? Must be nice and chilly at the moment especially in the mornings. Adelaide Hills in the Spring time - so good for Cycling and Motorcycling. Up Magill Rd. to Lobethal; up the Gorge Road; through Chain of Ponds etc., etc. Too bad it couldn't be transplanted to the hinterland of the Sunshine Coast :)
[/Off Topic]

I've already fixed the Windows XP installation with the use of the "chkdsk /r" for which the results were included in my original post.

I have also backed up the necessary data files.

What would "chkdsk /f" accomplish?

I'm going to be installing Linux on it. I haven't decided which distribution yet though and the landlord and his 9 year old daughter, especially the landlord, aren't that knowledgeable with computers and there are financial constraints to consider. So, it would be nice to be able to use "smartmontools" or some other Hard Drive Health Monitoring Tool to keep an eye on the health of the hard drive but as you have seen from the results, so far, there is a problem in accessing the S.M.A.R.T. features of the drive.

They couldn't find the original Windows XP Professional CD-ROM and Windows 7 is not a viable option neither. The CPU is a Pentium 4 (2.66GHz) and the PC originally only had 256 MB of RAM of which 32 MB RAM was being used for the GPU (Graphics Processing Unit). I have since upgraded it to 512 MB and added a dedicated Graphics Card with 64 MB of RAM which were top quality components I had as surplus after 2 of my own upgrades.

The drive only has 4KB in defective sectors. As per the topic at the following link a drive could have Hundreds of Thousands of defective sectors and still be functioning.

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showth ... t=18250850

However, if possible I would like to "clean up" the disk before installing Linux on it.

The logs indicate that the drive is S.M.A.R.T. enabled but attempts, to access the S.M.A.R.T. attributes and data, are unsuccessful. What would be the cause(s) of such a symptom?

Is it possible to "reset" the disk in some way so that S.M.A.R.T. commands function correctly?

Will the RST or ERASE commands achieve this?

What does the RST command do?

After some trial and error I have managed to get Victoria and MHDD functioning from a USB Flash Drive configured to Boot into MS-DOS.

On my first attempt with MHDD I received an "Invalid Opcode" of "1D85 D600 3006 0530 0070 3006 613C 3605 084D AE00 0009 0000 4353".

To avoid that error, I had to use the Shift + F5 key combination when DOS started.

Victoria also reported 1 UNC error.

The following is the latest Log from MHDD but there's nothing really new in it.

I did some more research and downloaded SAMSUNG's EsTool program.

I started the Drive Diagnostic function and, like the Hutil program's "Self Diagnostic" function, the Test Loop Count Number remains stationary on 1.

When I press the Enter key, a message is displayed to indicate that errors were detected and a recommendation to use the ERASE HDD function and then run the Drive Diagnostic function again. When I pressed the Enter key to dismiss that message, another message is displayed that indicates the following.

Code:
READ DMA: TEsting... Pass !
CHECK S.M.A.R.T.: Testing...
Service Code => AJ38 : SMART Error

Some more searching found pages that indicate AJ38 = "SEEK NOISE". However, as I've already mentioned, I'm not hearing any noises from the drive.

There is no ERASE HDD function in EsTool (V3.00G) but there is a "LOW LEVEL FORMAT" function.

Hasta pronto, Michael.
