SEAGATE ST31000340AS no access and PCB gets hot

May 21st, 2014, 15:23

Hi there,

New to the forum and hoping to get some input.

I've attached pictures of my drive label and both sides of PCB.

This was a slave storage drive on my Windows PC.

I can no longer access the files on it. The PC does not recognize it being connected at all.

When it powers up it sounds normal. Starts spinning and the usual little sounds of it reading. No strange clicks or clunks.

I have noticed that the PCB will get warm within the first minute of it being powered up and then proceeds to get hot at which point I have disconnected it to avoid causing more damage.

Looking at the PCB with a magnification lamp I don't see any evidence of what is getting hot.

I took it to a local PC store where they did what they called a BASIC attempt to get files from it. They stated they hooked up and tried to go in via (Linux?). They admittedly stated they were not data recovery specialists but offered to try for free as I purchase a lot of parts from them.

Any ideas on what to do to try and recover my family photos/videos off of this drive?

By all means, ask me any questions that you need to know which could help figure out what to do.

Thanks so much.
Will

Thank you for the quick reply.

Do you think that the PCB getting warm so quickly and then hot is normal of a 0-lba or bsy bug?

OK, would you recommend my next step be to try and verify BSY stays lit before doing anything else?

Thanks,

I am so happy I found this site! You are all amazing!

I see there are many different TTL adaptors on eBay.

Which would be the right one for my application?

I read the threads for the links you provided Spildit and there was mention of different voltages 3.3 vs 5 depending on drive.

Could someone point me in the direction of an eBay listing for the correct TTL Adaptor for my 7200.11?

Thanks much

You need a 3.3V adapter.

Just want to make sure I get the right one.

Look like this would do the job?

Also the SD15 firmware is very susceptible to the 'bug'. So much so that it would be almost inevitable after a certain number of power cycles.
