Hi,

I have a 1Tb Toshiba external hard drive, which backup all my data from my laptop. today I downloaded the HDDLFF 4.4, hoping to clean up any potential viruses and bad sectors in this drive. The FREE version is really SLOW, and took almost 7 hours to finish the low-level format.

When I launch the "file explorer", this drive is not showing up. I googled and found I may need to do the disk partition first in order for it to be recognized by the computer. Then I went to "Computer-> disk management" to do the partition. However, when I performed the formatting ( I guess it is a high-level formatting), it took quite a while then the system reported a failure of the formatting.

I thought the first-time low-level formatting might not be performed correctly. Then I took another 7 hours to perform the second low-level formatting, then the disk partition. Still, the formatting cannot be completed correctly with error message popping up.

I am really frustrated about this, and did this low-level formatting operation damage my hard drive?? I will appreciate it if you can save my hard drive ! Thank you very much !!!!

- Frank

(1 TB) / (7 hours) = 39.7 MB per second

40 MB/s may or may not be slow, depending on the drive model and on the interface.

Examine the SMART report using a tool such as CrystalDiskInfo or HD Sentinel.

http://crystalmark.info/software/Crysta ... dex-e.html

Look for reallocated, pending, or uncorrectable sectors.

On the back of the enclosure, it's labeled:

v63600-C 1TB

P/N: HDTC610XK3B1
S/N: 72IWT1UATTV3

KCC-REM-TSD-CanV63

E145163

I have no idea which one is the model number.
I attach a picture of the label for you guys to identify.

Each time I hook it up to my laptop through USB port, the computer is seized and frozen, and
eventually crashed. I had to pull out the laptop battery and did a hard re-start.

does this HDD have a virus, or what caused this ?

I only got this HDD for a year or so, and didn't use it heavily.

No, if you formatted the drive it won't have any viruses. Most likely it's a failing hard drive (very common for externals) causing the system to hang. Or it's an issue with your computer.

Try formatting from another computer. If that doesn't work, throw it in the trash and get another.

I don't recall precisely whether internally this is a SATA or USB interface drive. If it is SATA, then testing in a non-windows environment is much more recommended and likely will have better results.

The failures on this can be of different flavors, bad sectors, firmware, possible mechanical, or a combination of those.

Careful with how much you tamper with it. These are not forgiving.

I d don't know the program you mention, but you DON'T EVER LLF a hard drive unless it's an old MFM or RLL drive... c".)
Any IDE or SATA drive will be immediately RUINED if Low Level Formatted.... (!)
I'm surprised none of the others mention that...

The fairy tale of low level formating will never die. Software marketing is caring for it.
