Toshiba MQ01UBD100 (As of now lost everything)

April 19th, 2015, 16:17

So this Toshiba HDD I have has recently stopped working upon plugging into my computer in which it use to work, it only renders the regular windows 8.1 plug n' play sound, the HDD presents a blue light and then begins flashing and eventually stops, the platters inside continue to spin but I cannot open the HDD on my computer, I have tried it on multiple computers. I have a bunch of important files on this HDD and have not found how to pull them off, I took the HDD out of the Toshiba case for trouble shooting but have found that it appears to be a USB to SATA adapter in which there is no plain SATA connector I could just use to pull my data off. Upon examining the pins inside of the USB connector, the smaller chip in the right socket is missing a piece of plastic, as if it's been chipped, it appears as if all the gold connector pins are fine. I am lost at this point on how to save my data, any help would be much obliged.

Model: MQ01UBD100

Here are the images for troubleshooting assistance.

I would imagine the drive has media issues (bad sectors) that the USB only interface is struggling to cope with.

Hmm, that is a valid response, would you personally recommend any trouble shooting tips to at least get it to read?

The damaged pin is pin #10. That's a USB 3.0 pin. Have you tried a USB 2.0 cable?

Basic rule is that you need to convert this drive to SATA and then use software tools (since you don't own hardware tools, I presume) that know how to work around bad sectors (like GNU ddrescue).

To convert to SATA, you need a compatible board and then solder the adaptives chip onto it.

This is a good idea, but if the problem consists of bad blocks, then the USB interface will find it hard to tackle them.

Looks to me like the pin itself is OK, and it's just the plastic insert that's damaged.

But, as you say, worth a shot with a USB 2.0 cable.

You guys are the best!! The USB 2.0 indeed actually worked, I learned something new today! Also when trying this on my 8.1 it did not register but I tried it on my other laptop running Linux it worked perfectly, again guys, I thank you very much. Now I can salvage my data and have fun with the hard drive

I was mainly going by the OP's quote of " it appears as if all the gold connector pins are fine" and what I could see in the photo on my iPad.

Well done spildit, you're the big hero!! :D

Well they are intact but the Plastic is missing some, I guess it's bent a little and isn't making full contact. Oh well, it will all be bent after I'm done moving my files lmao.
