it doesnt show up in the bios but the drive is making the sound it does when nothing is accessing it like its spinning and only spinning with no clicks and no sound of it being read just a spinning disk but it does show up in device manager.
in device manager it comes up with a strange hardware i.d

anyways im wondering if their is any way i can access and back up my data from the drive as it has pictures dating back years aswell as a lot of videos and my years of music work that i have done leading up to my advanced diploma

Hmmm, that ID does indeed seem odd. If you go to disk management in admin tools, what capacity does it show? I'd guess the drive is having a firmware or hardware issue and is going into kernel mode.

Not in device manager, but in disk manager found in admin tools > computer management > disk manager. There you can check what capacity it shows. Also if you SATA connect it rather than USB it's easier to tell what's going on. I'd guess its not reading the factory ID through the USB adapter properly.

agreed, it could be FW or Hardware issue but unlikely a pcb issue.

Yes I highly doubt its the PCB, especially from a laptop drive. Most likely bad heads or SA damage.

Most likely hardware issues. If the drive isn't properly initializing, it won't correctly identify to BIOS and you're pretty much stuck.

While you certainly can try replacing the PCB (provided you have some soldering skills) I tend to doubt its the problem. I think your best bet is to have it looked at by a pro data recovery shop and see what they say.

if it a firmware problem you will loose the money. Most DR-firms do a free diagnostic of the harddisk. Then you can take the next step a PCB swap by yourself or recovery by a firm.

You should remember that there are risks to sending out the PCB. If it gets lost in the mail, or damaged, the price of recovery will skyrocket as they will also have to rebuild the ROM code.

I'd just seek out a recovery firm and go from there.
