Hey folks,

Just thought I would ask the sea of brilliance and get a real answer here.

I have been using a Western Digital MyBook for backup for photos and music sessions, etc. I do both in Chicagoland.

Made the mistake of bringing my main back-up here to NY with me. While working on some files, the drive took a dive off the kitchen table and fell about 2 feet on it's corner onto a slate floor.

I panicked, plugged it back in. It is divided into 4 partitions. Initially only 3 of the 4 showed up on the desktop. At this point I decided to unplug it and leave it alone until I figured out what my next step would be.

Curiosity got the best of me and naturally I plugged it in later to see what would happen.

At this point all that occurred was that the drive would spin up, not make any unpleasant clicking noises or anything that sounded dreadful luckily, but the white led would just continue to flash, and nothing appearing on my desktop.

Fear, denial and anxiety.

I brought it back to Chicago and decided to take a look at the drive. Upon removing their proprietary connector, and having a look at the HD controller pcb, I noticed something interesting. Where the power connector makes contact on the board, it appears to be charred. A post elsewhere mentioned that one of the possible reasons that the white light was continuously blinking was due to low power. Does anyone have any insight on whether this board looks normal? Obviously it's hard to say for certain, but do you suppose my data is still alive and well, and a swap out of this board could bring my drive back to live long enough to recored the files?

I'm attaching a photo and anyone with an opinion, please weigh in.

Thank you so very much for your time.

Bill

TL;DR

Dropped external drive, cant read, flashing led, controller board look charred. what next?

The drive probably has head/media damage. The "charred" area is unfortunately normal.
