Toshiba DT01ACA100 HDD - Whistling ...And Dying?

July 7th, 2015, 16:53

Hello Everyone,

My HDD has been emitting a high pitched intermittent whistling for about a week now. I spent several days trying to locate and repair the problem. I've installed HD Tune and got the results but I really don't know what they mean. The benchmark graph looks terrible but for all I know it is supposed to look like that. The HD Health came back as "OK" but the whistling noise is driving me crazy.

Please take a look at the below images and tell me what is recommended. If I need to replace the HD, I would like to make a copy of the disc image and transfer it to the new drive. Any suggestions as to what I will need or should use to make the transition as painless as possible would be appreciated.

I would definitely be cloning that drive *now*. Soon as drives start making odd noises it's time to clone/backup and replace. While your drive seems to be "statistically reasonable" I'd not be taking any chances.

I'm not sure what to use under windows though ( badblock copy? http://alter.org.ua/soft/win/bb_recover/ ? ). In linux I use ddrescue (v1.19)

Good luck.
