I got this external HDD as a present, but it stopped working after three years or so. It was originally an "iomega prestige 500 GB USB 2.0" with a sturdy aluminum casing, but I extracted the HDD after it didn't show up in Windows. I can't really say I've been nice to this little fellow, as it several times fell on the floor and had a couple of dents on the case. Still, I've kept it for 10 years now just in case it was possible to fix it. There isn't anything very important in there, but there's a lot of folders and files I collected in my youth, which I want to go back to :)

I got a HDD Docking station, but the HDD won't load on my computer. It sounds almost like a vacuum cleaner for a few seconds, then suddenly shuts itself of (stops spinning). I've tried connecting it to my stationary PC as well, but the same thing happens. Any tips on what the problem may be? I've considered buying a PCB to replace the old one, as it to me sounds like there's something wrong with the power, but it goes for 50$ just for that one piece :S

"Sounds like a vacuum cleaner" doesn't bode well :-(

If it sounds nasty, then chances are it's a physical issue and not DIY

99.9% won't be PCB so don't waste your money.

+1 - Don't waste your money on a PCB, sounds like a head failure, or worse, platter damage. Scrap it and move on and spend your $50 on beer.
