3tb Seagate hard disk clicking, any ideas? [VIDEO]

July 26th, 2015, 17:47

hey guys,

before I start, yes I know, clean room, death death death etcetc.
I have a dead drive that I'm interested in just looking at and understanding. So yes, I have taken the cover off and exposed the platters :P

So here's a video of what it does: https://astropointy.no-ip.org/~yoinkster/Seagate.mp4
This is not what most people get with clicking drives, normally (from what I understand?) people get the heads stuck or the spindle motor is a corpse but that doesn't look like what mine is doing.
Does anyone know what's going on and what a potential fix would be? I've tried swapping out the PCB with an identical, working drive but it still does the same clicking.
Like I say, I'm not really trying to fix it, I don't care about the lost data but as an experiment I'd like to try to fix it for my ego and if I set fire to it more than it's already on fire, c'est la vie (:
I'd google it but I can't really think of a decent enough query to describe what it does xD

Thanks.
