Broken Hitachi 5K320-320 (2,5") - Need your help

July 25th, 2015, 17:01

Hello alltogether.
First i have to say, that i am new here, so excuse me if a question appears "stupid" for you.

My Problem:

The Laptop of my father quit, and has taken the HDD into a "semi-death".
I took the drive out of the Laptop and put it into my Desktop PC.
The drive was recognized but did not show any partitions nor the drive in the workstation (Windows / 64bit).
It was shown in the "disk management" as "not initialized", if I tried to initialize it, I got an I/O error.
TestDisk showed "Read Error" in each sector and does not recognize any Partition-
So I finally made a SMART quick Test with DFT from HGST, where the drive was fully recognized.
The Quick Test passed without any errors.
The Extended Test failed with a "Read Element Failure", but I can hear the Heads moving normally in Quick Test.
The drive does not make any strange Sounds, all the Smart Attributes are fine and the drive has done about 7200 Hours.

My opinion is, that in the moment the Laptop died, it damaged a part on the PCB which is responsible for controlling the read element.
I don´t think that the read element itself is not broken, because - Tell me when i am wrong - there are at least 2 heads or 4 heads
and one or two Platters. (I don´t know exactly)
So I think i would have been able to recover at least some data when the read element is faulty, e.g. when 1 of 2 heads failed,
but even Photorec wasn´t neither able to recover nor to find any data.

I have a second good drive which is the same type, but the Serial and the P/N Number don´t match.
By changing the PCB´s, both HDD´s were not working. So i changed the PCB´s back and the good HDD is working again,
the bad one has still the same issues.

So now my question(s):

Is it possible to make a full backup of all data from the PCB of the faulty HDD and to put that data on the PCB of the working HDD?
(My intention is to change the PCB´s to get the data).
If it is possible, what Hardware and / or Software Tools do I need?

I want to help my father to get his crucial data back, because he is Jobless at the moment due to a bad Injury and therefore
he does not have the money for a professional data recovery.

Thanks for spending your time and you patience.

Greetings from Germany,

Ouzo01

A drive that is password protected will report a read error for every sector.

Ok. But we have never put a password on it.

Do you think there is a password from the manufacturer, in this case Acer, on it?
Do you think that is the reason why i can´t get any Data?
Or do you mean the password which is required just after the BIOS post?

You can check the drive's security status with tools such as HD Sentinel, HDDScan, Crystaldiskinfo.

I have to thank you!!!!!!

Thank you very much!

I just remembered taht my father always had to put a password before the Laptop booted.
I am lucky that i repaired the defective mainbord of that Leptop by exchanging that board with a used one from ebay.
So i just put that HDD in, and started the Laptop.
And, it booted!
So now i erased that password.

Thank you very much!

Happy Greetings,
