Hello,

I have a Seagate ST3000DM001 that clicks several times then stop spinning after it was plugged on USB port all the night.

I guess it's a head issue.

Is it true that only the first 3 characters from the SN are required for head swap to work?

I've read that the FW, PN and Site code must match too!!

Virtually no criteria.
Pure lottery.
The heads are selected very badly.
Very often, the surface scratches or gashes of in the trash.

Dear Tomset,

What is the solution? should I test heads with the same first 3 characters of the SN? or should I follow the other recommendations (PN/FW/SITE) ?

just from sticker you can not determine head compatibility

Actually you can determine head compatibility from sticker (have to disagree with these guys). That doesn't however mean it will work. DM series heads are just extremely sensitive and often fail during the swap or after the first power on. The issue isn't compatibility, as the heads are always killed and don't even work in the donor afterward.

Here's what I match:

First three of serial (four if possible just to be closer)
Site Code
Part Number
FW (same if possible, one version off usually still works)

Then it may also be helpful to transfer the head adaptives in the ROM code. Sometimes it helps sometimes it doesn't. But plan on doing 3 or 4 head swaps and still possibly not getting much data, these often have damage that's unseen but is enough to keep killing the heads.

You forgot part number, which is the most important one with DM series drives since the model is only generic. If you're not looking at P/N, no wonder you're having issues.

But that donors choose not easier.

I put the PCB of patient on a donor .
If without knocking, there is a chance that the heads fit.

yes we do also same, for DM series we always try to find closest manufactured.

Hi,

It is not impossible to get these work with donor heads, but they are very fine tuned, so it takes some tools to get them read...
