Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

Hi,
I have a damaged Hitachi 2.5" PCB with a damaged NVRAM chip.
I have an exact match Donor PCB.
How can I programme the Donor NVRAM chip to work with the HDD, as if I understand right, the NVRAM stores a unique adaptive information which obviously is lost )-:
Thanks for your help

Who did you tell that ?

In any case you need dedicated equipment to do that OR / AND the know how to do it , in the worst case it needed to be "rebuilt".

I think you are confusing NVRAM with ROM.

Thank for the replay

In any case, the whole PCB is damaged (severe water damaged) )-:
What can be done?
is it possible to use the donor PCB without using parts from the old one? if so... what do i need to do to make it work with the HDD?
Thanks again

Write the EXACT model of your drive or put a picture of it as a first step.

Who opened it, any why?

Data recovery "specialist" that did't know what to do with it
June 29th, 2012, 9:06
Why would that specialist open the drive if the problem was with the pcb?
Perhaps, since you said this drive has suffered water damage, they wanted to check if interior has been affected too?
Anyways, I think that you should give up if there has been water damage. Maybe that "specialist" was not too wrong, and internals are damaged by water. Someone with the right knowledge and equipment must look inside. If interiors are clean, then you must replace pcb and transfer adaptives from one board to the other.

The problem is that the PCB is gone, is there a way to do it without the adaptives?
can the adaptives be recreated somehow?

Is possible, but is much more complicated with 2.5" models. You need to make sure this gets handled by somebody who actually knows how to handle this case.

For me, yes. P.S. I love this "ADAPTIVE", "UNIQUE" , "UNIQUE, ADAPTIVE" definition.
O tempora, o mores....

BlackST means that there is no adaptive data in the NVRAM under consideration. This is the way he laughs at you....

I didn't get the joke but thanks for trying (-:
Can you please tell me what can be done? can I use only the donor PCB to make the drive work?
if so.. What do I need and how do I do it?
Thanks

Yes. Study how exactly the firmware of hitachi/ibm work and what is expected to find in that chip. Then program the chip. Simple. Or send the stuff to someone who will analyze the disk and do it for you. Or find 1 in 100 pcb that work. Or...

Another joke or mockery...

No it's not a joke. It's exactly how it works. I am not going to explain a detailed structure of the FW including what's in NVRAM anyway.

BGman & BlackST
I noticed the following:
BGman Joined: September 30th, 2005 Posts: 347
BlackST Joined: July 18th, 2006, Posts: 6125
Which in Simple Math BlackST posts are 1/10 x 2 of BGman more or less, considering Registration Date Diff.
Well, in my point of view, no need to explain or talk more about it, Statistics does it .
Thank you

Quantity ≠ Quality

Well, Based on MATH, i can tell you Nick that:
When you do a lot of QUANTITY work, one day you may/may not choose the Quality side
BUT
You cannot start with Quality without passing through Quantity..... Am i right? hehehh
