HGST 4TB won't mount. Sound included...

January 7th, 2016, 19:55

A HGST drive failed on me. Won't mount.

I opened it and the head and plates seems ok - for my unprofessional eyes: no scratches, full and loose movement.

When I connect the HD, this is what I hear. It will do it for hours, non-stop, until I shut it down:

What can cause this?

Thank you for any tip/advice!

That sounds like catastrophic media damage, and heads scraping away at the platter surface.

As you've left it scraping away for hours on end, I'd say those platter surfaces are now ground to dust with zero chance of recovery. :-(

The original problem?
Bad heads and most likely platter damage.
Current problem?
All the above and many more.

You opened the drive in non controlled environment.
You also let a drive with severe mechanical failure run for hours.

I'm sorry but chances of recovery are slim to zero IMHO.

Thank you.

This is very strange.

The HDD was only opened for a few seconds to look if the head is stuck or the plates' surface scratched.

I saved a few HDDs - for recovery - in the past after releasing the head.

Visually, it looks perfect - not even one little scratch. Nothing is stuck. No friction.

What could have cause this?

Thanks again.

Unless it sustained some sort of physical shock, likely just wear and tear.
How was the drive used (24/7, once in a while, etc)?

It was in a server, 24/7 for about two years.

There it is. Wear and tear. High capacity Hitachi, when they go, they go. Typical media damage is on the lower surfaces, hence why not visible.

If you still looking for data - send drive to me I will do my best to get data from it. I am good with HGST and scratched drives.

I wish you all the best of luck, you'll need it judging by the sound of this one :-)

Thank you all!

The data is backed up and nothing was lost. I was just curious to know how the HDD failed.

Thanks again! :)

I don't know what you talking about. I am playing with 40 5tb drives from raid 6 right now. Too busy.
