Hi,

I have a Maxtor that had bad heads. Changed heads (or on this case swap platter) with original disk PCB.

Jumper in master position.

Disk make small noises and becomes ready on PC3000 but when I run the Maxtor Utility identify the disk with no serial number, 0 MB and detect imediatly the disk as in safe mode but the jumper are not in the safe mode position.

Any similar case like that?

Drive doesn't read anything from platter. So something happened wrong. Hard to advise anything because it could be many different things. Did you do similar job before on this model?

If heads compatibility is not the issue, learn how to work with drives with this behavior in safe move. More than likely the drive has firmware issues as well.

Was the bearings bad?

I think it's Diamond max 8 (40 or 20 GB)
So, the OP swap platter.

Or maybe I am wrong?

Your description looks like the drive is unable to read the microprogram. Exact reason why that happens is to be determined during further work.

Also chances are that the donor is incompatible. These Maxtors are quite strict in terms of spare parts compatibility.
If you post stickers of the patient/donor, it will be possible to tell whether they suit each other.
