Samsung M9T Preamp problem

Hello Guys.

would I like to know if somebody already works with this new HDD, with same behavior?

Samsung / ST2000LM005 / HN-M201AAD / 2Tb / USB

The initial problem:
- head was stoped on disk
- I did de procedures (who works with head, knows)
- the head was damaged (I saw on microscope)
- I don't turn on the disk becuase head damaged

I found a new head.
The new head is the same but with different revision.

When I put the new head, the hdd doesn't start, doesn't spindle, we have only terminal...

MAYBE the problem could be the revision of head...

How this head is not compatible we turn back head good to orignal donor disk.

When we start the donor disk with original head, the disk doesn't turn too...

Now there is the same log on donor.

When the head good was on disk of job it doesn't starts, doesn't turn,,, how it sen't bad preamp...


So, did somebody work with this disk?

Problem in a difference of the Preamp types. It's need to find a donor heads with the same preamp type (VID=12, TI5565, probably VID=11 L2958 could be compatible). You couldn't overcome it by another way, generally.

Agree. Sad story is that it's quite impossible to get compatible heads just by inspecting the sticker. You need to have the disk physically or ask the seller to hook up the terminal and post the output to you...

definitely incompatible heads.
I believe currently drive is not spinning. You can verify this by placing donor pcb on this hdd and drive will spin up but unfortunately will not work, you have to find the compatible heads.

If I understand correctly, the donor heads back on the donor drive give the same error? That can't be correct.

Can you show terminal start report of donor drive with returned donor heads?

The OP stated that the patient drive "doesn't spindle", so I assume that means no-spin, in which case it appears that the preamp may have been damaged by the patient PCB. If so, then could the "Invalid PA VID" error be bogus? That is, could this message simply be the drive's default response to a nonexistent preamp? One might be able to confirm this by testing the PCB on its own.

Is there any chance that the preamp voltages are different, or that the HDA connector pinouts are different? I could help with identifying the respective voltage test points.

I understood (perhaps incorrectly) that after the HSA swap, he returned the donor heads to the donor HDA (with the donor PCB) and it didn't spin and gave invalid pr-eamp error. How would trying the donor heads with donor PCB on the patient HDA have a different result? I suspect (as Franc suggested) the patient PCB damaged the donor pre-amp, which is why the donor, returned to its original state, now gives the invalid pre-amp error.

How does the patient's headstack identify itself to the patient PCB? The headstack wouldn't need to be reinstalled for this test.

It should have different results, unfortunately it seems OP did't test it first when he swap the heads.
i will try to post some logs if i find some drives for experiment.

i guess You damaged donor heads , maybe by handling or maybe its damaged by patient PCB etc . As you told when you swapped Donor head back to donor drive , the drive is behaving same like as with patient . i guess the heads were already gone when you swapped on patient media .then you got that log on patient drive and same when you swapped back to donor .
