Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

Hello,
This is my first post on this forum. I would like to learn about data recovery. I have disk Seagate Barracuda 500 GB ST500DM002, firmware KC45. At the moment when I connected this disk to computer using USB converter disk is not showing in Windows, but is showing in CrystalDisk Info and HD Tune. Disk is showing as ST_M13FQBL 4,1GB, firmware 03041738. After connecting power to the disk from disk hear a few beeping noise but motor don't work.
Could help and advice me what I should check? Is it possible repair it, maybe not for correct using but for accessing to data? I don't have any special tools like PC-3000.
Kind regards
Marcin

What you describe here is "Stickion" but highly unlikely on this model of drive. I would say bad heads / media damage.
The reason the drive is only showing up as 4gb is because the HDD cannot load the firmware from the platters.
Sorry but not much that can be done here DIY from what you have explained. If data is important you should use professional data recovery.
You can try and connect the drive to a TTL Adapter and post the terminal output, but i don't think this will help in your case.

Or bad pcb or bad usb controller.
I would try first to connect the drive to sata power supply and listen if platters spin up, if spin up then it means that the controller usb is faulty, if still any spinning sound then could be PCB issue or sticktion or motor problem.

Have seen stiction several times on this model, which given the "beeping" noises may well be a possibility.

Thank you. The data for me is not important becuase disk is for learning. What does it mean "stiction"?
USB controler is a right becuase I tested a many another disks and works well.
So if it is heads damaged then I need donor drive with right heads and replace it in clean room? How can I better testing pcb? I want be sure that pcb is damaged or right?

You might try a donor pcb (same pcb model) and see if motor spins, if spins then you will have the confirm that original pcb is dead.
P.S.
Don't aspect to be able to acess your data again by only changing the pcb, to access data again you should also transfer rom from original pcb to donor (of course it will work only if there isn't any other problem inside the drive).
PCB swap without rom transfer should be made just to find out if the problem is on pcb or inside the drive, if motor doesn't spin even with donor pcb then most likely you have head stiction.
Head stiction is when heads are stucked on platters, this usually can happen due to bad power supply or mechanical problems or due to drive shock, expecially on seagate.

I think your hard drive bad head needs to be replaced to restore the data
