Hello everybody,

I would like to ask you for some help with my HDD (Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 1CH164-510 fw cc27).
Two days ago, I received some errors in Windows and after PC's restart my HDD was/is unaccessible.
I have some exams coming (Cisco) and all my documentation is/was on that HDD.
I am using an Anker docking station connected to PC using USB3.0 cable and I don't know why it not remains connected doing on and off.
The HDD spins ok, no click sound and using different software I am able to see the partitions (size, name) but not the data inside.

I don't think that is a mechanical problem, could be the PCB/Controller card but this is only my opinion.

Please help me ... if it is possible.

Thank you very much.

Without even looking at the terminal output, I can tell you right now with about 95% certainty that the issue is either the media cache or auto-reallocation features of the drive. This model has a crazy high rate of developing this issue, we see several in here each week. It's an easy enough firmware patch with the right tools, and usually 99%+ of the data can be extracted after. Don't even attempt replacing the PCB, it's not the issue.

Pro recovery will be much faster for you and shouldn't cost more than a max of $500USD. We charge $450 for these cases, but I suspect you wouldn't want to mail it across the ocean. Try contacting PCLab: http://www.pcimage.co.uk/

He should have no issue handling this case for a decent price.

PCLab is at www.pclab.com.pt facebook.com/PCLAB.Assistencia.Tecnica. I think Jared mean to say, contact Clive at http://www.pcimage.co.uk, given that you are in the UK.

There is any solution that I can try at home ???
What software do I have to use to read/export the terminal output information?
Reflashing the drive could be a solution?
I looked on the Internet but I didn't find any flash for my HDD. On Seagate website it says that no flash update. Could you please help me with that?

Thank you all

There is a DIY solution. You need to start by obtaining a USB-TTL serial adapter. Then you can use terminal software such as PuTTY or HyperTerminal to view the drive's diagnostic output. This will tell us what is going on.

For those in the US, I would advise hanging on to their drives and waiting for the outcome of the current lawsuit against Seagate. Perhaps the 2TB DM drives will be affected by it as well, in which case users may win a free data recovery.

With the speed of the US law system (taking into account appeals etc) this case could go on for many years. AFAIK the lawsuit and does not cover the 2TB drives?

The lawsuit targets the 3TB drives, but if the lawyers are intelligent (my impression is that they are technically ignorant), they will realise that the 2TB and 1TB models are afflicted with exactly the same malaise. If Seagate really cared, it would provide a free solution to all its customers, or they would allow one to be published, just as they did for the 0MB problem for the 7200.11 series in their old forum. It just burns me up to see so many in the data recovery profession charging a week's wages for a simple, single-click fix.

I think you have the wrong fix for this drive model. The failure of the 3TB drive (in my experience) is not just firmware, its head failure. When we resolve most DM series 3TB firmware fixes they still have a head issue. Quite often the head issue leads to media damage. While some can be resolved with a firmware fix, the majority are much more complex. But yes you are right some DR companies do know how to charge.

I can imagine that a drive with 3 platters may have a higher incidence of head crashes than a 2-platter or single platter drive, but, going by Data-Medics' comments, it would appear that firmware damage is a significant issue across all three models.

BTW, I notice that media cache is disabled in the CC9x Grenada firmware and enabled in the CC4x versions. This would suggest that the former should have a lower failure rate. It would be interesting to analyse BackBlaze's statistics with this in mind.

OK ... I've got one USB-TTL serial adapter .. could you tell me exact the next steps .. configuration .. commands

Thank you

Connect terminal and just power on. No need to issue commands for terminal output.

What is the right order for terminal interface?
GND RX TX - SATA - POWER or GND TX RX - SATA - POWER

Can use RS323-USB to connect?
RX TX GND
O X X O X
O O O O

or do I need a proper USB-TTL serial adapter ?

Thank you

I would agree with Data Medics that firmware is a significant issue with Seagate drives, but the 3TB DM has other issues as well. From what I am able to gather, a significant portion of the people supporting the lawsuit have lost their data. ie they have already been to a data recovery company and the drive is classed as unrecoverable. These people want compensation from Seagate, while the others want their data recovered free. I have had three cases in the last few months with 3TB DM series drives that we could not recover. The client understandably asks if there is anything else they can do. So I personally sent their drives to Seagate to see what they say. All three came back as unrecoverable. Interestingly Seagate never give the reason for the failure as media damage......

I'm not fully convinced that Seagate data recovery tries very hard. They are all but a faint shadow of ActionFront.

You are probably right Luke, but with the lawsuit hanging over Seagate, you would think they would pull out all the stops!

Half of year I am coping data from this hdd. It was in Ontrack before and they told it's unrecoverable. I don't think they can't - they just don't want to (same as seagate in similar cases). They can't spend half of year and more for a case (if price for recovery not tens of thousand dollars).
