HDD is old faithful 7200.11 MOOSE
. Its FW seems to be almost 100% OK
Customer was unaware how disks work and they are going to die one day. He has backed up all family photos videos in this external usb disk which is crashed.
It has 4 heads out of which I have imaged 3 heads without any errors. However while copying from Head 3 I am getting errors.
I could copy data using head 3 but it is very slow and with bad sectors. If I skipped file then it runs smoothly for some time. Then suddenly it starts giving bad sectors ( all sectors bad then & I am forced to power off/on)
I have cleared SMP flags assuming this is system file issue but that has not given any respite.
Head does not seems to be dead but either weak or some Head 3 related firmware file is having issue.
Can someone pls. guide me ? I am using PC3000 UDMA express Red card

WO WO WO :D
Thank you so much Guys I am sure now I will be able to find true cause of this issue & give all videos to poor family.

Hi MindMergepk I have checked Head resistance , attached is snap.
Hyuce -- Yes I have tried to read from PC3K utility I could read with same bad sectors and slow speed.

Yes Northwind you are right all three registers alongwith ERR and ABR glows when disk suddenly starts giving read errors. - I have attached its snap also.

I have observed one strange thing -- while initializing utility says default family settings loaded and it shows disk has 3 heads ,but actually disk has 4 heads
Is this reason that due to some reason PC3K is unable to identify head 3 and so giving all this errors.
It is highly unlikely that 75% disk sectors are not having any bad sectors and only sectors covered by Head 3 are bad.

Hyuce -- Yes I have tried to read from PC3K utility I could read with same bad sectors and slow speed.

My opinion you may have a translator issue.

doesn't look like a translator issue.
heads seems fine to me.

have you tried a different PCB ??

A translator issue or other firmware issue wouldn't be specific to just one head. It would affect all heads equally.

@OP, there is no "head 3 related firmware modules" the firmware is for all heads at once and isn't specific to just one head. I'd suspect the issue is either just a weak head, or media damage. That or the service area degraded in the time since you imaged the other heads out.

I haven't witnessed it myself, but someone on this forum has had it. One head virtually unreadable until translator fixed. Very rare!!!

head resistance does change sometimes after translator regeneration.
OP has imaged with 1 head so very unlikely a translator issue.

Hi Thanks to all guys
I have rechecked disk again as suggested by all of you and have following observation --

1) I can read flawlessly by 3 heads and by head 3 till it starts giving read errors
2) I have checked all modules overlays they are good
2)SA defects also ruled out. besides SA is read by Head 0 which in itself is fine.
3) I checked DIC-- Data Integrity check Head 3 & DST -- Drive Self Test head 3 both are ok
4) Head resistance is not changed -- head 3 seems to be in reasonably good condition. Though Head test and resistance are not absolute benchmarks for heads tests
5) I have checked Servo Flaws list -- it has 162 entries and all by Head 0 and 1 only so degradation of platter is ruled out.
6) Since we have been able to image 75 & disk any issue in PCB also ruled out
7) Is it that pc3k is not fully supporting firmware SD81 as it shows only 3 heads in utility status /Unable to read independent zone table
8) Module 002B -- read write operating parameters -like translator is OK
9) As Sean has said this could be translator - need to check this , how can I check status of translator?

10) N8 shows lots of reallocation issues --
a)BGMS reallocation failed
b)Reallocation Failed
c)Marked as BBM
d)reallocated
I this this is root cause of the issue.

Update to case --
I have been able to image 30% sectors on head 3. But now disk is not reading from this head at all. It starts to throw all bad sectors since start.
surprisingly head resistance for head 3 is same and is not altered

:D :D :D :D :D 100 % Data Recovered :D :D :D :D

Magic formula was m0,2.... & all bad sectors vaporized in thin air. I was able to image all sectors covered by head 3 like other working heads.
To my customers delight 100% data was recovered.
Thanks all who contributed in this success story.
However this was not head problem nor firmware ( may be translator not sure ) then where was the issue ?

Hi northwind
Yes it was some kind of translator related issue (may not be actual translator module which was perfectly fine)
Full translator issue would not have allowed to copy anything from other heads too.
We can say translator related to specific Head 3.
Thank you
