I have a ST9160824AS Momentus 5400 FDE 2 drive, and would like to reuse it. It comes from a Lenovo notebook and has a user password. SID is printed on the label. Original notebook is not available.
- Lenovo DOS crypto erase executable (drverase.exe) doesn't work from a desktop pc, run from DOS floppy it says it needs pure DOS,
- Seatools for Windows doesn't think it is an FDE drive and thus doesn't offer to crypto erase (only FDE backup and restore),
- Seatools for DOS most often freezes immediately after starting crypto erase, and occasionally complains of incorrect password (untrue) or BIOS not supporting security features (true).
Can anyone help with this?
PCB can be seen here. Is there a method to read ROM (serial port is locked) via software? TSSOP8 pogo adapter is too expensive. Or any compatible PCB to get access to SA? Thanks.

Glad to hear that $20 doesn't matter to you. Unfortunately, not everybody is so lucky.
What's the point in using something that is still usable? I think, there are many points this consumer society thinking made you forget.

Just being realistic. I could generate $20 cleaning cars in the time it will take you to figure out that you cannot unlock it....

I reuse as much as I can and accept when I cannot

You could turn it into an LED clock :D they are rather awesome!

The password would be stored as keyboard scan codes rather than ASCII characters. That may be why you cannot unlock the HDD in your desktop PC.

The master password was changed, that's why SID doesn't work.
Does anyone have app for this drive? Fw: CODY_S-17_3.CLD

Still waiting for some help with app code, or for someone familiar with Momentus 5400.3 (Venus/Cody) type ROM structure in order to modify it to overcome terminal blocking.
If someone has an un(b)locked ROM - assuming that the (b)lock is implemented in the ROM - and willing to help, this is the ROM I need: S-17 03-07-07_17:18 (3.CLD).
TIA.

Hello everyone,

Is there any chance to read ROM data and find out the master password?
I know there is a similar procedure for WD drives (seen on this forum)

I have Momentus 7200 FDE.2 250gb (st9250414asg fw: DED1).
It was obtained from a fingerprint locked Lenovo
Replacing the pcb didn't work nor placing it into another laptop (same model, ofc)

I don't need the data from the disk 'cause I have it on the cloud... I just want to reuse it
