Seagate st2000lm007 board issue!

December 26th, 2016, 13:35

I have a Seagate st2000lm007 2Tb drive. I booted up yesterday and it ran for about 5 min and the OS froze. When I did a hot restart the bios said it could not find the drive.

The drive is spinning and you can here it park when you remove power. The machine was not dropped or any type of impact when the drive quit.

I have swapped several boards from one drive to another after changing out the SMT eprom but that is the extent of my hard drive repair experience.

I think this one has some type of board or firmware issue, so my questions are.

1. Has any one done a board swap on this drive?

2. Does any one here have equipment that can reflash the firmware on this drive.

Thanks
Sam

I have connected a TTL adapter to the drive as described on this page http://atola.com/products/insight/manua ... ction.html The drive does not display any information over the serial port.

The site does not list a Ground connection, I am assuming they are using the ground in the USB to SATA bridge. For S&G I have attached a ground to the case of the drive as I do not want to land a ground to a +5 and let some of the magic smoke out of something. I still get no data in the terminal with the ground connected.

If any one can reflash this board please let me know and msg me with a price..

Thanks
Sam

Just for the sake of covering all my basis, ohmed out the ground pin on another seagate drive I have attached it to my TTL adapter and I get a response in the terminal.

I still get no response from the st2000lm007

Newer models have a 1.8V LVTTL interface. If your adapter is a 3.3V type, then it may not work. Measure the voltage levels on the Tx/Rx pins at each end.

There is a Kindle modification that you could try if the voltages are in the 1.8V range.

Another possibility is that your terminal is locked.

Good Call, So it is 1.8v. I did get a response in mobaxterm but the drive seams to not like it very much. I only get information when the drive is first booted and nothing there after Ctrl-Z also does nothing. I am not a big hard drive guy but I work with serial quite often dealing with WiFi Radios and Land Mobile Radios. I have never came across 1.8v TTL yet this is a first.

Any who the drive spits out

I am working on building a bi-directional TTL converter, I just got a call with a customer that has a network outage. I am going to trouble shoot their problem and jump back on building the TTL converter..

Ok, made a bi-directional 3.3v to 1.8v and it still does not like it. I am ordering a 1.8v ttl now.

It is putting random artifacts in the terminal.. I do not want to move forward and issue any commands until I am 100% positive I have solid communication with the drive. I have been burned on serial eeproms in radio equipment in the past to the point of having to remove plcc32 chips from the board and place them in a external burner to regain communication to a device. This board looks like its a SOC and I have not found any information on JATAG for this drive. So do to my past experiences I am going to Error on the side of caution.

I am going to attempt at clearing the cache and/or resetting SMART if that does not work I am sending it to some one to be connected to a PC3K. From the research I have done it looks like worst case the board can be swapped with a like in kind and the firmware matched to the current version then the drive can be recovered.

If I am wrong about any of this please correct me, Like I said before HDDs are not my normal day to day but I work with 2-Way land mobile and Wireless networking radio devices down to the component and prom programming daily.

I see so if firmware is the issue it must be repaired because if you move the bad data to a new home you still have bad data, The only way it would make since to move to a new board is if the board has un-repairable damage. Even if you attempted to move to a new board you would need to transplant or dump the rom. Well I guess that firmware may be an improper term to use as it is more of an embedded OS, as would explain the SOC.

Is the issue known as to what makes the drives freak out?

I have seen the seagate firmware update that keeps the drive from going back to BSY status after a BSY repair is made, is there a similar situation with this drive?

I am wondering if I should go back to WD drives, Setting aside physical damage I have never had a WD drive fail when it was still in warranty!

If I remember correctly these have internal ROM?

I set this aside for a while as I have been busy, I thought I would give it a go tonight and it looks like it is locked. Does a know method exist to unlock the drive?

This is Rosewood.
Even PC3k still doesn't have a function to unlock terminal.
Only none comercial software which made by one guy from this forum can deal with. Method keeping like a top secret.

You dont need unlocking to clear smart

Ok, I misunderstood the command set I found. After changing levels I was able to issue N1 and it did clear SMART.

However the drive did not boot once SMART was cleared. I do believe this is the point where it needs some one else to look at it. What is the persons user name on this forum that has the ability to unlock the terminal and work on this drive. I need a price from him/her..

Log of the terminal after clearing SMART and restarting the drive..

And please explain to every one how I am in a different position than I was in when I made post #6!

I Just wanted to point your fruitless post out as you appear to think you are all mighty, when you did not even read the whole thread before letting a warm smelly substance ooze from your finger tips on to the keyboard!

And to every one else, I thank you for your constructive input! I wish clearing SMART would have made it boot again, But better luck next time. Drive repair is something that sparks my interest, I don't think at this point I will ever buy any tools such as PC3K or platter/head tools "but my hat is off to you guys who do this". I have enough expensive Radio Service Equipment from my Ham Radio hobby that has barely paid for it self, The wife would lay a brick if I started purchasing drive repair tools just for fun!

Thanks, pepe

Shoot me a PM with a price range, I am going to get with Doomer also and see if he wants to give me a price on it too sense he is closer. I will let you know ether way.

Once again thanks to every one who had constructive input on this!

Re: Seagate st2000lm007 board issue!

Hello, I think I have same issue. This is a Seagate ST2000LM007 PN: 1R8174-568 FW: SBK2. The drive spins up and keeps spinning, I don't heard mechanical noises, but it is recognized with capacity = 0, so there is not data access.
How can I do? Anyone could repair or recover data from this model with success?
