Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

Hi,
The HDD came with problematic ROM.
Can read ROM,
Can read all modules of ROM Except "47"
The Head Map shows Wrong
I've been able to read TRACKS from SA with a loader+donor rom, tried to regenerate ROM, it produced following 4 modules - [0B 0D 4F 30], also ROM.
47 and 0A still can't be produced.
WD20NMVW-11AV3S2
PCB: 1961 - Converted to SATA 1959
Any assistance would be highly appreciated

if rebuild is not working, what about checking ROM ver from SA tracks and ask here or try to find it from other sources.
just a thought.

I used DONOR ROM + LDR to gain SA Access and was able to Read Tracks. also, I've extracted Modules from Tracks.
I used different combination of ROM+LDR while I got access there.
I've attached the modules 102-109 [107 doesn't exist]

Yes, the test confirms the issue with ROM and 47 as reported in the first run.
The attached modules 102-106 have no contents, those are blank, only 108 and 109 contains info

Thanks for your assistance, I'll update you once I get any findings

Yes, as customer confirmed it is untouched, and also it looks like untouched to me. I'll discuss again with the customer.
What can be done with WDR on 47?
December 21st, 2016, 16:32
@shahij, there is nothing wrong with the patient ROM. The problem is that your tool doesn't understand that it should be using the directory in module 20B rather than 0B.
See your thread at the HDD Oracle.

No, there is not abnormal noise, it spins smooth without any issue.
The HDD came up as no ID, converted to SATA and in Kernel Mode it showed
Heads number : .................................: 0
Heads number in use : ..........................: 0
heads map : ....................................: [Blank]
Tried to Backup ROM and ROM Modules and found 47 is inaccessible and couldn't backup.
Then used DONOR ROM +LDR to gain access to SA, failed. Then modified DIR starting address, and was able to gain access to SA, and also was able to read Tracks.
That's all.
I've also checked another SHREK LT HDD and found everything is accessible by the tool in use "MRT"

Thanks drHDD for the generated 47. I've just rewrote all original ROM, It's modules and the 47 by drHDD. now the drive comes Ready immediately but get busy once tried to access in Utility.
Will edit dir to get access and will update here
@spildit, no, all Tracks were read smooth without any issue!

Strange thing is that - now the new generated 47 is reporting ERROR at the first time it did!!!

Follwing pics represents existing condition with original ROM/modules as exactly while received the HDD

Spildit wrote:What do you mean by changing DIR starting address ?
If you use non-native ROM + Loader and you can't get to SA you can try to edit dir in RAM and load dir from file to RAM. Then check SA. Make sure you have correct regions for SA set on RAM as well.
I mean ABA starting address in ROM
Spildit wrote:If you have access to SA then patch module 02 for the "slow issue" and write it back to the drive. Try with the native ROM now. Does it change anything ? Still no ID ? Did you check module 02 as well ?
Fixed the 0A issue by editing HEAD MAP in ROM
Preparing to get access to SA now

I've been able to access SA with original ROM, though it's reporting 47 error.
I changed the Head Map on 0A.
Accessed to SA with original ROM + Original Loader
Here is the module 02 attached

The case Is solved. Rom Is fine. 0A mod were Bad. Its fixed by editing the Head map. The traditional process of patching 02 didnt work. It keeps the drive busy once tried to Access.
Donor 02 helped to solved. Ill expect the original 02 to be patched.
Ive a same model HDD. Ive checked and found 47 Is ok on This one by the same tool. The tool Is not issue.
After writing the mod02 from donor, data area accessible as well as 47 reports fine.
I also tested the 0A, its reporting the same before fixing and after fixing the hdd.

Im in phone now, not in pc. I didnt use the slow issue fix button on the tool. Tried to patch 02 in hex. It didnt work. Used donor 02 to get quick Access and it worked. See the above 02 n patch it. Let me wrire it to check

Oh, i see u have already patched 02. Will test tomorrow. Thanks for all the thongs

Spildit wrote:If your original 02 is locked/edited my patch will not help you at all as it will only solve the slow issue or stop to read LBA when some sectors are hit. If you post your good module 02 i will patch it for the slow fix and you should be good to go even with original USB PCB.
@Spildit, here is the possible lock in mod 02:
- Code:
Data record #32:
79d: 00 00 00 00 00 00 01 .......
Try changing the 01 to 00 and re-post the patched mod 02 so the op can see if that unlocks it.

Spildit wrote:The new generated 47 ? The posted 47 module was extracted from your original rom.bin file !!! No need to regen anything it's good as it is.
I would attempt to patch the head map module on ROM with a known good copy from a drive of the exact same family and model and with the same head configuration. Either that or set the head map with MRT exactly the same as the working donor.
Maybe someone else messed the ROM with some sort of firmware tool ?
Maybe you did some tests and those changed ROM to block SA access or test for bad heads ?
If you enable the heads to the correct configuration in ROM and you power off/on does the drive regain access to SA ?
I have edited the Head Map in ROM instead of using DONOR, it worked.
No, no one touched the case, I've confirmed with customer. It's gone bad while it was connected to PC.
No, I tested things, but with keeping original backup. And the issues were found while I received the case. As the Head Map info was showing bad as well as 47 was reporting error, That's why suspected ROM issue.
Spildit wrote:Reported error on 47 might be MRT bug.
Can you post donor ROM as well ? With donor ROM do you get the same 47 error ?
No, this is not MRT bug, I've confirmed by testing one of my another HDD from same family and same model.
Yes, I can post DONOR ROM.
DONOR ROM and 02 Is attached
Spildit wrote:Ok .... Can you please upload donor 02 and donor ROM so i can compare ?
My guess is that someone messed those modules then. There is no way for the 0A to be "damaged" and still get the correct checksum. So .... Someone used FW tools on the drive and edited 0A on ROM and 02 on platter.
I've reconfirmed with the customer, he is from my good source, nothing was done to the HDD.

New problem arised.. The issue was fixed by DONOR Module
For test, I modified the Original 02, and wrote back again, and from then, I can't gain access to SA by any method.
Tried different condition of ROM+LDR, but can't access!

Your patched Version 02 worked!
