WD my passport slim 1 TB sticker ?

February 1st, 2017, 1:44

Hi, I have a portable Hard drive with important information that I unfortunately droped.

the thing is, I took off the sticker with a lot of information that looks like this (http://s21.photobucket.com/user/trex51/ ... V.jpg.html) and did not take any photo.

i saw that the head reader of the hard drive were bent ( probably when droped) and then called a Data recovery company for an estimate.

They told they can try to recovery the data but they need the sticker information or else its a lost cause.

Anyone knows how i could retrieve such information ? i already called WD and they don't have much. I cant find it on forums for my exact model.

here is my HDD info :

Part number : WDBGMT0010BAL-93
Serial number : WX91A83N7957
Manifacturing date 15 September 2013

Model : WD my passport slim 1 TB

any help or clues would be greatly appreciated ! thank you

P.s.: the company is charging me 400$ non refundable flat price just to try to find the sticker info and recover my data ( Wich would be another 1200$)

it is not lost case without the label, but charging a decent amount is fairly understandable in such situation.
I assume it was also disassembled, and might have problems injected by your acts. Nobody likes to work for free on cases others messed up by their ignorance or other reasons.
Working in the industry i also have a bad feeling when i have to deal with drives after somebody kindly messed it up. I have to deal with unknown issues independent of the original problem, loosing a lot of time compared to how it worked if some smartass haven't touched the thing.
It is bad for both the client and us: the client gets his data back in a lot worse condition, probably in a lot wider time frame,
and we can't charge for the extra time we need to spend on the recovery, at least not as much as it would be reasonable, so briefly we loose on the case too, not absolutely, but relatively.

my oppinion.

definitely a false statement, and not true

if its a lost cause, why do they even try ?
400$ just for "trying" to find that info ? WOW

Hi,
Can you provide the backside pcb board no. of the same, if the PCB board is 2060-771823-000 rev then the model of the hard drive will be WD10JMVW-11S5XS, 2060-771961-000 then the hard drive will be WX10JMVW-11AJGS.
But for DCM DCX and other parameters, the original sticker is must and should. Lot of retrials has to be made blindly on provided above information to get the data out from the disk.

I know I messed up by opening it briefly and taking off the sticker info.

Any suggestion on how I could find such info (sticker) ? Or maybe I should try another company ?

Why did you took out the sticker ?

You cold try Luke ( lcoughey here on the forum ) . He is in Ontario, I think.

You don't need the sticker to recover the data.
The problem is with the consequences of your opening of the drive.
Assuming that you didn't mess up with the drive too much then chances are very good.

Agree, sticker is not imperative but the issue is all the tampering outside of a cleanroom.

That said, $1600 seems a bit steep. We'd probably charge half that.

So I should maybe look into another company then because they are telling that sticker information is vital or else it's to much hassle for them to find the parts needed to read data.

I'll call them today and see what happens

My advice would be to call Luke at Recovery Force (lcoughey), he will give sound advice and provide you with some reasonable options.
