ST2000DM001 won´t show Smart Attributes

February 2nd, 2017, 13:20

Hi friends:

I have a curious case. This are hdd details given by Victoria 4.47

Model: ST2000DM001-1CH164
Firmware: CC44
Serial: W1E1SXTE
Disk size: 3907029168 LBAs 1907729 Mb
CHS: 16383/16/63 8063 Mb
SMART: Enabled, Errlog, Selftest

HDD has some bad sectors, but can not remap giving remap error.

I thinking on a fw issue, because smart attributes not showed with any utility (Victoria, Crystal Disk Info, Hddscan, Mhdd, Hdat) neither via terminal command.

For example, in Victoria i get the following:

AM 09:12 : Get S.M.A.R.T. command... OK
AM 09:12 : SMART status = GOOD

BUT NOTHING MORE SHOWED.

So, i suspected a corrupt smart module and try to read 133 sys file using r133 command in terminal mode. Command finished with a Diag Error so i decided replace it with another ST2000DM001 FW CC26 133 sys file using w133 command. Now r133 command finish ok and after N1 (smart reset) command attributes are showed in terminal, but after power off/on not showed again.

Any idea? I don't founded any CC44 FW update, can somebody send me FW CC44 sys files for upload using terminal command?
thanks in advance.

In my opinion it's a waste of time to attempt to fix this drive, even more if it does already have bad sectors.

Try to write the S.M.A.R.T. sys file to all copies of the SA and try to clear S.M.A.R.T. again. Power the drive off imidiatly and back on. Also try the S.M.A.R.T. ON function on Victoria ...

If it doesn't help and if you only have terminal and no other F3 tools then forget about trying to fix this junk. Just toss it on the bin and go buy Hitachi !!!

Try to write the S.M.A.R.T. sys file to all copies of the SA...
Thanks Spildit, Can you explain how to do this?

What tools do you have ? Only Hyperterminal ?

Do you have something to read/write modules and sysfiles like a "decent" firmware tool for F3 Arch ?

For example on my test drive 7200.12 there are a few modules related to S.M.A.R.T. like 0009, 000A and 0035 :

Those can be read/writen by "Copy" instead of ID and you can select to what copy you want to read/write (Using SeDiv) :

Also i can see several sys files that are S.M.A.R.T. related ...

To read sysfiles selecting the copy you want to read/write using Hiperterminal only :

If you replace the sysfiles/modules power off/on the drive as soon as the module is written so that S.M.A.R.T. info in RAM is not written back by the drive to platters reverting the changes you have made.

Thanks spildits, for now i only have terminal connection. After N1 command i put drive in online mode (ctrl+R) and smart data is showed, but when power off not showed again.

For now i put apart this hdd. Is frustrating because i have a lot of st2000dm001 series which can not be repaired. Almost all with the same issue, massive bad sectors through all surface. I can not understand how whole surface can be degraded. It is not posible. And every body in forums says forget dm series!!!

+1 !!!

Forget DM series.

In fact FORGET ALL F3 ARCH Seagate drives !!!

Let's say that you have BAD magnetic substract / materials used to make the platter. You now use the drive (platter) and write stuff to it. You place the drive in a shelf and you don't use it for days.

Due to bad materials the magnetic substract/platter loose the properties and the data recorded there is gone. Now you pick up the drive and install on the system to read it. But the data is gone ....

Reality is that with those DM drivs they are loosing your data even if you don't use them. It's not just a question of bad heads that can be solved with clean room to get your data back, it's way worse, quality of materials used to produce those drives is very poor.

Also firmware is very badly coded so even at some "minor" problems the drive will hang.

Just compare with ST-10. Go get some 7200.10 drives and see the percentage of failure against the % of failure on those junk DM ...

Just don't use them and forget about fixing them.

There is no way you will solve the problem of a platter full of bad sectors even with the most expensive firmware tool on the world....

Trash them. You might want to save the PCB in case you need it.

Great! This is the first convincent explanation i readed about dm series mistery. Thanks very much.

Just a last dude: ST2000DM001, ST3000DM001 are 7200.14 or 7200.12 familiy? There is a way to know by terminal seagate family details or any document with this details?

Unfortunately access to seagate site (as many others like intel, ebay, etc) is forbidden from Cuba due to U.S embargo...
