HI all
This is my first post and it will be a long one… I am sorry about this.
I need help, I am not that good with HDD’s but I can’t find anyone who can help me with my RAID0 problem. Here is my problem,. I have 2 Seagate cuda’s 300GB’s running RAID0 (sorry about that). I was not able to get any of my files so I gave my drives to one (PRO). After about a week he told me that my first drive is dying and the end of the week died completely. He was able to get some info from it but when he gave me a flash drive … all files where unreadable. (Pictures are all destroyed no avi’s). He did tell me that I have a bad board.
My second drive has a good board and it is the same model as the first one, S/N is deferent.
So, here are questions that I have.
Can I take board from the good one and replace the bad one, use a recovery program to read it?
If this is ok to do, what program would you recommend?
if everything works out (I hope) and I get saved recovery image( or whatever that is called) can I make a virtual RAID0 so that I can mount both drives and hopefully recover all my files.

All help and explanations would be highly appreciated

Thank you for reading

Clone the good drive, sector by sector, with a tool such as ddrescue or HDDSuperClone. These tools understand how to work with bad sectors. They also maintain a log which enables the process to resume after an interruption.

What is the model number of your drives?

Does the drive with the bad PCB spin up? If so, does it make any bad noises?

Can you show us a SMART report? You could use tools such as CrystalDiskInfo (Windows) or smartctl (Linux).

You have attached a SMART report of 5 drives
I assume the RAID0 you referring to are 2xST3000DMxxx ?!
1. Judging by the drives model I would say replacing the board (PCB) will not help you
2. Since you say it doesn't make unusual noise, I would start with a terminal log
3. Almost sure there is problems with MC/heads and or media damage

I fully agree with Jeremy on this. The problem won't be the PCB and replacing that is only going to further complicate the situation. These drives are very prone to issues with the firmware specifically related to the media cache. They also have weak heads, but if that were the issue usually the drive would click and spin back down rather than sound normal. The fact that the drive is able to read ID for the SMART report but didn't actually read any SMART info pretty much confirms that the issue is either the media cache or bad sector re-allocation firmware bug.

It's an easy enough fix with the right tools and experience to get the data extracted. However, DIY is going to be a tough route and you'll most likely not succeed. I'm not going to say impossible, I'm sure a few guys w/o pro tools have been able to accomplish the task if the issue wasn't too bad, but most give up long before they make any progress.

Just to give you a baseline, we charge a flat $450 to recover drives with that issue, so long as the heads haven't failed.

I would guess your original "pro" was more of a computer repair tech, than an actual data recovery professional. PC repair guys are not going to have the proper tools to really work with failing drives and most often all they accomplish is running up the cost of recovery by causing more damage to the drives.

@fandi1, if the problem is confined to media cache and/or firmware bug, then there is potentially a simple DIY solution. To this end you would need a TTL adapter to access the drive's terminal log.

BTW, your WD drives have Current Pending sectors that you need to keep an eye on. Also, the Read Error Rate is non-zero, so watch that attribute as well.

The first thing that a "pro" would do would be to diagnose the problem and evaluate the failure(s).

We typically remove the heads in this family of drives and check for head contamination and media damage as part of the diagnostic process. If a drive has contaminated heads, then trying to copy data off of it in that state could destroy it quickly -- some drives with head and media issues are prone to quick degradation.

Assuming the heads checked out OK, the next step would be to use a hardware imager to make a clone of the drive(s). I'm unfamiliar with the software tools recommenced to copy the drives, but I would generally avoid software programs -- AFAIK they do not turn off SMART and sector reallocation.

If a drive has hardware issues, YOU CANNOT USE A SOFTWARE PROGRAM TO ADDRESS A HARDWARE FAILURE.

If a failing drive was run for a long time (a week???) in failing mode, the drive may become unrecoverable.

You need to get good images of BOTH DRIVES to get an acceptable recovery with RAID 0 - the strip sizes are often smaller than file sizes!

We don't know what intervention your "pro" provided; their tools; level of expertise, and the current condition of the failed drive. If they do not use best practices, your data may have been put at [unnecessary] risk along with your chances for recovery.

If your data is important, I recommend that you STOP what you are doing, and send BOTH drives to a known competent firm to see what your chances of recovery are at this point.

RAID 0 recoveries with one failing drive should not, IMO, be attempted as a DIY project.

Well said Jon. If you don't care about your data and have no intention of paying someone to recover the data, then go ahead and follow the DIY instructions. The end result will likely be a fatal crash and burn. But, if there is any chance that you would consider paying for a professional to recover your data, it is best to do it while the data might still be recoverable.

I would like to thank everyone who looked at my post and replied to me.
in the nutshell, this data is important to me it has pictures and avi's of my kids.

i don't understand enough to even think about opening case and i would like someone to look at my drives

data-medics ... i would like to take you upon your offer of fixing my drive i will try to contact you.

thank you again all

Keep an eye means:
* backup your data (even from a good drive)
* don't save valuable data - you cant afford to lose - on it

Here is a potential DIY solution:

viewtopic.php?f=1&t=34631

Code:
F"READ_SPARING_ENABLED",0,22
F"WRITE_SPARING_ENABLED",0,22
F"OFFLINE_SPARING_ENABLED",0,22
F"DAR_ENABLED",0,22
F"DISABLE_IDLE_ACTIVITY",1,22

How do I keep an eye on it? lol Like this?

Keep monitoring the SMART attributes. If the raw values start to rise, then be prepared to remove the drive from service. As already advised, maintain regular backups.

Maybe you can explain to me how this is going to help the OP when the other drive of a RAID 0 has "failed completely?"

I'm not sure I understand the benefits. The downsides seem pretty clear -- the remaining "good" drive could become unrecoverable, so why risk it, if the first (bad) drive is going to require clean room assessment of the damage anyway?

I wish you could look over my shoulder sometimes at the MANY drives we receive from clients who read advice like yours, and go full speed ahead without checking for sand bars, or even if there is any gas left in the tank, before they launch out to sea . . . and later discover they are over their heads, or the boat is taking on water . . .

Maybe you should have a disclaimer and warning with your posts, as a standard feature?

The drives aren't the real problem here. The true problem is that you are using RAID 0 to store crucial data that isn't backed up. At the very least use RAID 1, or even better RAID 6 and an offsite backup.

Read it again ... slowly this time.
