Memory problem

New to the forum and hoping I might find help.

A couple of years ago I had an external hard drive declare itself to be RAW. After some searching I found a site that showed how to use a text editor to "reset" the disk to NTFS by changing 2 or 3 characters in or near the starting address of the disk. I understood the risks but the disk was a write-off anyway so I gave it a try and the disk is till working today.

Sadly, old man's amnesia takes over and I can't find any reference to the method I used - can anyone point me in the right direction please?

I don't have an urgent need but it would be good to "have it in the locker" in the event of a similar failure in the future. Thanks for any help given.

There are few types of RAW partition problem, corruption of type indicator in MBR it is only one of them.

Thanks, Martin, I understand that but what worked once might, just might, work again. As I said, I can't find the change to be made either on the web (where I found it the first time) or saved on my computer.

I have seen cases where the partition ID byte was changed. This can happen when the external drive is connected to a TV, or if the partition is converted from basic to dynamic. The partition table will also be changed if the drive is "initialised" by Windows. There are several other possibilities.
