Hi, I've a 500G drive died. Not recognized from bios, no noise ... nothing.
I tried to swap logical board with working identical drive: the stepper motor spin but (obviously) disk don't work!
I tried to swap roms (little 8 pin chip) and surprise surprise my disk don't work but new disk (with old board) yes...
So it's possible that the data in rom chip are corrupted? It's a possibility to repair?

After you swapped rom, does patient drive spin?
If it doesn't spin then most likely you didn't soldered rom chip properly or you killed it (short circuit, overheat, etc).
If it does spin but you don't have access to data, then very likely some portion of code (NVRAM) is corrupted.


Dopo lo scambio delle rom, sei riuscito a sentire se il motore del hdd paziente gira?
Se non gira allora probabilmente non hai saldato correttamente il chip o l'hai danneggiato (corto circuito, surriscaldamento, ecc.)
Se il motore gira ma non hai alcun accesso ai dati, è probabile che una parte del codice (NVRAM) si sia corrotto.

Dato che mi scrivi dall'italia ti rispondo in italiano che magari mi spiego meglio. Dopo lo scambio il disco A (quello con i miei dati) con la scheda B (quella del disco donatore) e la sua ROM A continua a non dare nessun segno di vita come prima dello scambio. C'è sempre la possibilità che il chip si sia bruciato durante lo scambio ma ne dubito, il lavoro l'ho fatto fare presso un laboratorio di riparazioni eletroniche e infatti il disco donatore B con la scheda A funziona perfettamente. A questo punto, secondo me, il problema o è nel chip danneggiato (è possibile che si danneggi solo quel chip e il resto della scheda sia perfettamente funzionante?) o qualcos'altro all'interno del disco.

After I swapped rom chip disk A (that with my data) with board B (from new disk) and its ROM A didn't work, no motor noise. It's possible that I kill rom chip but I don't think, disk B with A board work well. In my opinion there are 2 possibilities: rom chip is dead (can the chip die and the board be ok?) or something else inside the disk.

If you can get the adaptives out of this chip you can try a same rom from other hdd with same firmware and replace adaptives and it will work .

Do you mean that donor HDA + patient PCB + patient ROM/NVRAM is a working combination with full data access? Did you try this before transferring the chip, or did you do this after transferring the chip from patient PCB to donor PCB and then returning it from donor PCB to patient PCB?

Provalo con entrambe le pcb.

After changing the pcb, the only way to really make work these hdds, would be to transfer the rom chip (that is, every rom must be on its hard drive).

If you simply forgot to add 'with ROM B' in the quoted phrase then it would make sense, in this case it would mean that patient hdd might have some internal problem (engine seized or short pre-amp) or that patient rom got damaged as suggested by fzabkar.
Try to see how the patient hdd behaves by isolating the pre-amp of the heads, just put a piece of paper between the pcb and the heads contacts, then power on it and hear if the motor is running.

Try it with both PCBs.

Rileggendo il tuo primo post, ho visto che il tuo hdd paziente si accende con la pcb donatrice (senza cambio rom), quindi direi che molto più probabilmente il codice rom su è corrotto oppure si è danneggiato il chip rom.
Magari all'inizio era solo un problema di pcb guasta, ma poi il chip potrebbe essere stato danneggiato dal tecnico che c'ha messo le mani oppure non l'ha saldato correttamente.

Puoi mostrarci qualche foto ad alta risoluzione della rom, in particolare vorrei vedere come sono state fatte le saldature.


By reading your first post, i saw that your patient hdd powers on with the donor pcb (without rom swap), so i would say that most likely ROM's code is corrupted or ROM chip got damaged.
Maybe at first it was just a broken PCB problem, but then the chip might have been damaged by the technician who put his hands on it or did not weld it properly.

Can you show us some high resolution pics of the rom, in particular i would like to see how the welds were made.

Ricapitolando, prima dello scambio rom il disco paziente con la scheda donata "girava" ma ovviamente non veniva riconosciuto; quindi motore OK. Dopo lo scambio ROM il disco paziente con la scheda donata è completamente morto mentre il disco donatore con la scheda paziente funziona correttamente:totale accesso in lettura e scrittura. Il disco paziente con la sua scheda(e il chip donato) gira ma non viene riconosciuto. A occhio direi che le saldature son buone ( ho anni di esperienza in saldature e riconosco una saldatura fredda ma per sicurezza questo lavoro l'ho fatto fare in laboratorio).


So...before swapping roms patient disk with donor pcb "spining"but obviously don't working: I think motor is ok. After swapping roms patient disk with donor pcb was dead and donor disk with patient pcb works well(full read/write access) Patient disk with patient pcb (and donor Rom chip) spin but don't work. In my opinion welding are ok (I have year of experience in welding)

Se sei disposto a spedirmelo, vedrò volentieri qual è il problema e sistemartelo, sperando che la NVRAM non si sia danneggiata troppo.
