Read NHPA.... failed

Hi, there
I have a WD400EB with native capacity ~40GB. I did not use this HDD from few months, but 2 days ago, when I put this HDD in my system, BIOS and SO reported 32.23 GB capacity.
i TRIED mhdd UTILITY, it sais the HDD is OK, I tried to change to native capacity first permanently, the program reported this was OK, but the HDD cap remains the same (32.23 Gb). If I try to make the capacity of HDD smaller (15 Gb for ex) this is OK, BIOS reporting correctly the new size. If I try to make 40.02 Gb (reported native capacity), the program report DONE, but nothing change.

When I change capacity temporary on Native (40.02) this was a successful operation, MHDD reporting 40.02 GB. I made a surface scan, including new portion of LBA that appearing ( for 32.23 Gb... MHDD report ~ 66.000.000 LBA, for 40.32 GB MHDD report ~79.000.000 LBA's) and thats was OK.
But on next system boot, HDD capacity return to 32.23 GB

Another problem: after few tries a new error has occured:
when i try to give the command: rhpa, MHDD return:
init drive: Done
Read NHPA command...
Fail.
DONE (RHPA)

i try NHDA, mhdd return:
Init drive: done
Do you want to set Native LBA adress? (y/n): Y
Read NHPA...
Failed.
Done.

What means this??
What was going wrong?

But, where is situated this Jumper?
I've made a quick drawing of the HDD with the jumper settings. On electronical part (the bottom of the HDD) there isn't any jumper. Only the fifth between IDE and Power connector.

are you was use DISK MANAGER (DM) to see the capacity of your HDD?

I think, there is a cut of sector LBA near track O of HDD.

The code of this cut is : 20H.

Or you can re-record the firmware with PC3000. The module of WDC, you can download it from http://www.hddguru.com : HDD related files.

Actual capacity is: 66,055,248 , but capacity must be: 78165359 (take a look to CONFIG command)

@along: I dont understand exactly what you try to say on first half of your message.
for second half: I was looking for a proper Hdd BIOS on hddguru, but on WD\EB directory isn't any BIOS for my HDD. I found something in JB directory. Will it work?

What I am trying to say is this:

Most drives larger than 32GB have jumper setting to limit the reported drive capacity to 32GB. This is applicable if U have old motherboard with old BIOS that doesn't support capacities larger than 32GB, your large drive will be detected and U can use the first 32G of it.
However I don't see such setting for WD drives, but the symptom refers to this problem.
I had once a 120G samsung drive that had a processor error, it was thinking I installed the capacity limiting jumper though I did not. I could get it to see the total capacity, but only until the next power on cycle of course. I had the same max LBA value (66055280)
And from the log U sent here I can see U did that also.
So either U have jumper on some inapropriate position (that's why we are telling U to remove all jumpers), or the PCB is defective.
I would exclude FW corruption because of the amount of sectors U have.

Yes, I did. Nothing change.

This HDD has not any other jumper in any other place (except the 5 jumper between IDE and Power connector). Only if there is a jumper between electronical parts and mechanical parts, and I must remove the electronical parts to access it, but it is unprobably 99.99 %.
On this system I have another tho HDD ( 80Gb Maxtor) and my MB is EPOX 8RDA3. I think BIOS is OK with that. I put WD400 on other friends system but happend exactly like me (32 Gb instead 40).

AND why I can not modify my HDD parrameter with MHDD??
First time (5-6 dates) I could meke any change in HDD bios parameter. but now I receive this errors from MHDD:

Code:: Read NHPA command... Fail.

and

Code:: Read NHPA... Failed Done.

I think that it might be a "write protection" "set" by a preamp which is not fixable...

well, yes, that means that sometimes that jumper was set... And for some reason xti000 does not want to remove it

so what can I do. If it is not a jumper, than it is something weird.

Yes, now it is one big 32.23 GB NTFS partition. It don't have bad sectors, don't lose informations/ files etc....

Now, let me tell you the story with MHDD program:
FIrst dates, when I used commands: rhpa, nhpa, hpa was OK, every commands worked fine (except change capacity from 32.23 to 40 GB). After 9-10 cycles I discovered config commands. If I remember exactly this was succesion of parrameter I gave:

Is OK if I try to put a WD400JB BIOS in my WD400EB harddisk?

This is what you have to do:
1. Make the drive Secondary Master (no jumper)
2. Run MHDD
3. Erase from LBA 0 to LBA 1000 or whatever
4. Restart the computer
Now the drive will be recognized as 40GB
Make partitions of your choice.
