hello.
Hoping someone might know about this problem.
I have a WD My Book Duo 2 x 2TB model WDBLWE0040JCH that seems to have a bad controller board. Pretty sure the disks are ok.
My question is can I take an off-the-shelf My Book Duo (same model) and pop in the HDDs to recover ?
This particular one uses a JMS561 which doesn't see to have encryption in the hardware (as other models had JMS538s)
So I have no idea if there is encryption, or if so, how it is implemented on this model.
As for the RAID mode on the failed unit, it might be default (RAID 0) or RAID 1. I'm not sure.

Could you upload detailed photos of both sides of the PCB? Sometimes there is an easy, no cost DIY fix.
Can you access the HDDs via SATA? Can you retrieve a SMART report (eg CrystalDiskInfo)?
Can you see a file system? A disc editor such as DMDE would show the partitions, assuming there is no encryption. DMDE can also assemble a RAID.

Can you measure +5V and +12V at the SATA connectors on the PCB (pins 8 and 14)?

I measured most of the voltages. The SATA pins are pretty tight for my meter, so I'll have to figure out a way.

All the voltages seem to be OK.
There are two dual MOSFET power switches (U8 and U9) which control power to each of the HDDs. These would be under control of the JMicron bridge. If they are not being switched on, then it could be that the bridge is faulty. Alternatively, it may be that the HDDs are not switched on until the bridge detects a USB host at the USB port (you may need to plug in your USB cable). In any case, if U8 and U9 are on, then you should see +12V and +5V at the two SATA power connectors.
U4 appears to be the SPI flash memory associated with the bridge IC. If you invalidate the firmware by shorting the Hold pin to ground while powering up the PCB, the JMicron bridge should identify itself to the host with its JMicron Vendor ID and Product ID (assuming that the ASMedia ASM1074 USB hub doesn't appear instead). Normally the JMicron bridge will see WD's My Book PID and VID in the firmware and identify itself with that. This test will tell us whether the bridge is brain dead. (You only need to short the Hold pin while powering on. You can release it within a second or two.)

I'm curious about the circuitry around U6, J4 and J9. Could you tell us the markings on U6?

U6 markings are:
358 RBJ
I tried to look it up, I don't know what this chip is. but since it's close to the fan connector, maybe it's a fan controller ?
perhaps a LM358?
As for the Winbond U4/U5 flash chips, one idea I had, was to transfer them to a donor board in hopes that it would be
still valid for the data on the 2 drives from the bad board. That is if I can get a donor board.

U6 looks like an LM358 dual op-amp. Not important ...
Have you examined the drives with a disc editor? Ideally you would clone them.

I did plug the drives into a standard USB / SATA interface and tried to see if TestDisk showed any partitions, but it did not find any. That would make sense if they are encrypted.
I will try a disk editor and see what I can find.

Look for sectors which you could expect to be empty, ie zero filled. If instead you see a repeating pattern of 16 bytes, then this would be a sign of AES encryption.

ok thanks. I have a disk editor (Active Disk Editor) loaded and will look at the drive again soon.
What I saw on a quick glimpse, is no partitions detected, and there were no empty areas (had a pattern like you mentioned).

These are encrypted and generally RAID0.
I simply bought a new enclosure from ebay and put the clones of the duff drives in it and voila! Some minor file system damage but easily rectified.

thanks, I am trying to get the same model and hope that it works. From what I've read, it's not a guarantee.
But as you can see the thread, hoping that I can repair the controller board if the bad part can be figured out.

note the crystaldisk report contains 2 disks, the 2 TB one is the drive from the My Book Duo
