Reusing Hitachi VSP Drives

January 9th, 2019, 9:02

I bought a bunch of 2.5 SAS drives off ebay that came from a Hitachi San with what may be customised firmware. The drives will not allow you to create a volume in the array software. The sector size is 512b but as soon as you try to create a volume the disk will say fail.

I have searched the net and have concluded that it has customised firmware and want to know if anyone has been able to get these to work outside of the hiatchi environment.

Anyone can shed some light on this?

I know some people have had success with changing NetApp firmware in SAS drives, but have never heard of anybody correcting Hitachi proprietary firmware. Either way, you would need professional data recovery help to do this, so probably not worth it.
