Seagate HDD diagnostic port

September 14th, 2019, 5:41

I've never really worked with hdd's before, but I just flashed a Seagate ST3160318AS HDD with a custom ".lod".

Now I wanna connect to the drive via it's diagnostic serial port, but I'm having trouble doing so, and guide onlines have been very sparse.

Anyone here that might be able to help me?

First off I should probably say that the drive has stopped spinning when I plug it into the power, I do however think this is by design with the custom image flashed onto it, not entirely sure however, and not sure either if I can even use the diagnostic port on a non spinning drive.

Anyway, up until now I've soldered 2 wires to what I believe is the RX and TX pinouts of the port, and connected those to an ttl-232r-3v3-we. But I am not getting any response when trying to connect to it with putty or the Linux screen command

Any help would be appreciated :)

If the drive stopped spinning as a consequence of the firmware update, then the update must have been incompatible.

You can test your serial adapter in loopback mode by connecting the Tx and Rx pins. Anything you type should then be echoed on your screen.

Thank you, at least that's a place to start :)
