Hello
I'm just starting to repair a hard drive and I need some help. I have a WD external drive My passport
with a 500giga disk Model: WD5000LMVW in USB.
The hard disk starts up but after 5 minutes it disconnects by itself. I think it's a PCB problem, so I wanted to change the PCB, I found the same one, but I wonder if instead of putting a pcb usb we can put a pcb sata.
Here is the reference 2060-771859-000 REV-P1

Thank you for your advice

99% NOT the PCB.

But if you really want to try then you’ll need same USB PCB and switch “ROM” chip @ U12. Careful though, if you damage U12 chip then it’s pretty much “game over”.

You could switch to a SATA PCB but your data would be encrypted.

Much more likely to be a firmware and/media issue, or possibly a bad/weak head.

It's no PCB case 99.9999%
Bad sector in SA or user area or head problem.
SATA PCB could be solution with desktop .
But Risky for drive . Data would be gone forever .

Send it to a professional with the right equipment and knowledge to recover it.

Shouldn’t be too expensive at this stage before DIY tampering :-)

Hello
If I want to learn, I'm not going to learn by sending the disk.
I'm asking you to learn.
Thank you

What is the drive doing in those 5 minutes before it disconnects? Can you retrieve any data? Can you retrieve a SMART report with a tool such as CrystalDiskInfo?

Historical background:
The disc belongs to a person who drops it...
She told me she had some stuff on it.

Plugging in the disc:
It's not recognized in explorer, not Windows, not Mac OS, not Linux.
impossible to make an image, even with DDRESCUE
In disk management, it asks to initialize it while there are documents on it.

What to do then to retrieve the information, without of course going through a service provider.

Here's the connection made with crystaldisk
But for me it doesn't tell me what to do.

Was the drive dropped while spinning or while turned off ?
Did ddrescue extract some data or nothing at all ?
There are no reallocated sectors, and only 3 unstable / pending sectors, so the platters themselves seem fine at this point, but this looks bad :
Code:
07 169 169 __0 0000000002B8 Taux d'erreurs d'accès des têtes

It's probably impossible to recover the data without replacing the head stack assembly. If ddrescue can't access the data on the platters (because of a problem with the heads) there's not much more that can be done "avec les moyens du bord"... (Except praying Joe Pesci, but it hasn't been established as an efficient data recovery procedure.)

Historical background:
The disc belongs to a person who drops it...
She told me she had some stuff on it.

This should have been said from the beginning to get a proper diagnostic... And of course, if the failure was caused by a shock, changing the PCB can't possibly be the cure. Besides, if the drive can still be turned on it implies that the PCB is still functional.

For the disc the person does not remember if it was or lit during the fall.
DDrescue, unfortunately, didn't recover anything.
Thank you for your diagnosis. I understand he's out.
Is there a place where I can buy reading heads because I haven't found one yet?

Thank you

In an oversimplified approach, the procedure should be:
1) SATA adaptation
2) Test heads to ensure all are good (likely they are not, therefore requiring head swap)
3) Create clone
4) Decrypt data (how to do this depends heavily on what tools you have available). Without professionals tools, and since reallymine may not support it, likely you will have to do it manually with the use of a compatible SATA to USB bridge from a compatible My Book model external drive.

Lacking advanced tools, compatible parts and experience. It will likely be a very challenging recovery to learn from.

Professionals take matching heads from so called "donor" drives known to be compatible. (They keep many in store from various brands / models to be ready for as many jobs as possible, and for the remainder they must have dedicated providers... or sometimes for rare and old / odd models they resort to asking other companies if by any chance they have one in the depths of their inventories... sometimes it's so rare that the owner has to search a matching unit on eBay or something...)
As has been said above, with your current knowledge level, your current skill set and your current equipment, the chances of a successful recovery are about as good as the chances of a thousand monkeys typing on a thousand keyboards while seating in a sauna set to maximum temperature with no food or water to re-write Les Misérables before they all die from thirst and exhaustion.
So the owner has to decide if the drive's contents are worth about 600€ to get it done in a specialized data recovery company nearby, or if it is not (which means for instance that pictures collected over a 5 years period are not worth 10€ / month) then start the grieving process and let it go. Or perhaps someone here may propose you a significantly cheaper fee, but then there's the risk of shipping a HDD with unique content abroad. (I had such a proposal once after requesting a diagnostic on behalf of someone, in a similar situation, the owner decided against it and preferred to save money until she has enough to pay for an advanced recovery service without making a dent in the budget. Because, in its current state, if it's not tampered with any further, the drive's condition should not degrade, it can wait a few months definitely and a few years almost certainly if money is an issue right now. Unless the "stuff on it" is necessary now, for work or studies, in which case she could borrow 100€ from six good friends and repay them later on when she has succeeded in her endeavours...)

Shouldn't work with the original bridge ?

Hello
thank you for your response.
Well if I understand well 2 possible solutions either it is necessary to call upon a professional and the not possible no budget, or I have fun with the hard disk and form at the same time.
So I take the solution 2, the hard drive is a WD "WD5000LMVW" I searched on the internet, but impossible to find another one at a reasonable price for me.
so is it to use a WD5000LPLX as a base.

Thank you for your feedback

It would if we had a compatible healthy drive that would work with the patient's PCB to use as a cloning destination drive.
Since finding a drive like that is very expensive or hard to find, then have to implement the other solution.
