Hi Guys,

Looking for some advise on what is the best course of action to get my hands on partitions of the Endurastar HEJ425040F9AT00 (it/s 2.5" IDE for embedded systems, 40GB drive, manufactured 19Jul10)

Motivation: It's Car embedded navi disk for which manufacturer stopped providing any sort of updates in 2014 whilst the car was sold by dealership in 2011 and same were sold till 2012/2013 depending on the market. There is no way to get navigation purchased via official channels and it has been discovered that other cars have same navigation and updates are available for free so just porting files could do the trick to get updated navi. If I could just purchase new maps from the car vendor - that would be grant too, but they try to push people to newer cars. And yes, I know, tablet, phone... but I really like the embedded one and it is close to impossible to have any sort of CarPlay or AndroidAuto on the embedded screen - hence the journey and mini project to give it a try around.

It is embedded system and based on research done - seems like these systems lock the drive on the first boot.
Therefore the idea is to either if possible to read the pass and unock it directly using Endurastar drive) or get a blank WD disk and identify what is the password set - it is expected to have it not related to the disk itself so should allow to get password vide:

Questions are:
1. is there an interface/adapter which could be hooked up to laptop giving full access to ATA commands? Standard USB adapters will fail in this respect. Just don't have at hand an old laptop or desktop to get IDE interface.
2. Is the easiest course of action to get the password by getting the WD drive or maybe since we have 2020, there are easy password retrieval procedures for Endurastar disks?
3. Which is the most promising WD type of drive? The guy from the referenced threads used WD800BEVE. Is it the best choice?

Many thanks!

Try ZU:

ZU - ATA Password Unlock Tool for Several Drives:

Thank you @fzabkar - appreciated. Will try and will post results. Is there a risk to "break" the disk or cause the data access loss?

In parallel what WD drive would you guys recommend? Idea is that it might be easier attack vector with less risks.

Thanks!

Any WD IDE drive from around that time would probably be OK.

HDDSuperTool should be able to send vendor specific ATA commands to your drive via USB.

Thank you fzabkar. Did read not only the linked thread but all linked threads, including the one in Polish and Russian linked ones. These were mostly focused on getting around LBA 0 problems and z! to replace modules 02 to unlock it but very interesting read.
Downloaded the zu beta from download section here at hddguru, hope the zu.betta.050911 is the correct one.
I'll get the WDC drive and need to find a laptop now with IDE as prefer to keep it stupid simple and avoid having USB in the equation.

Thanks again!
