WD 4TB partition fix

January 23rd, 2020, 4:18

I've had this 4TB with me for a few years and had this go bad on me in early 2019. I decided to try to look into what was causing the errors in the hope to recover the drive with the data.

Ran an analyze on this drive with testdisk and took a few days to finish. Is this drive toast based on the bad partitions or how would I go about fixing them with the options in TD?

Thank you for any help.

It was not a good idea to thrash the drive for so long. Instead it would have been advisable to clone it with a tool such as ddrescue or HDDSuperClone.

I would examine the partitions with DMDE. DMDE should take less than 1 minute for find them.

Can you show us DMDE's Partitions window?

Thank you for the response. I installed DMDE and here is what's in the partition window. Should i do a full scan?

I also created a log file before scanning with testdisk which somehow filled up one of my other 1tb drives that the program is running on. My machine has been left on after the scan finished which took a few days nonstop. Can i close out testdisk findings and resume later with this log or i'll have to rescan all over again?

If you double-click the Ext Storage volume and expand the Root, do you see your file/folder structure?

You can get an idea of the physical state of your HDD with a SMART tool such as CrystalDiskInfo. Look for reallocated, pending or uncorrectable sectors.

I would not perform a full scan. You should probably clone your drive, especially if it has physical problems. Alternatively, if you only need a few files, then you could recover them directly with DMDE, to another drive, of course.

I do see the file/folder structure yes. I don't see my pictures folder though:(

Here's the smart status:

Your drive is sick (Read Error Rate and Current Pending Sector Count). You would be best advised to clone it, then work on the clone.
