How to recover WD Mybook Harddisk

August 30th, 2019, 6:11

Hi there,

i have a Harddisk from a WD MyBook. Bridgeboard burned.

If I connect the bridgeboard to the powersupply i just hear some bzzzzt near L6 L1 but nothing happen.
I ordere a Donor Bridgeboard and transfered the U2 BIOS Chip.
When I connect the drive it will be recogniced as a 2TB -> thats right
But theres no partition.
What can I do?

R-Studio wont find anything coz of the decrytion...

best regards
Fabian

Is it Oxford based "Bridgeboard" ?

Can you upload a photo of the bridge PCB?

Hi,

i cant see if the Board is an oxford Bridgeboard.
Here are the Pics of both.

It looks like an Asmedia ASM1051W. ISTR that this chip decodes in the same way as a JMicron JMS538S. :?

Asmedia doesnt do encryption, (BTW which model of HDD?) . Encryption came elsewhere. Was this storage used under MAC ?

AFAICT, the Asmedia ASM1051W bridge is pin compatible with the JMS538S. So the JMicron bridge does encryption, but the Asmedia does not?

@op
Did you try to connect the drive directly to a PC via SATA port?

Yes, exactly. And if you take more careful look to those poor quality pictures, you will find that donor PCB is JMicron based (top left logo) and patient PCB is Asmedia based (which doesn't do encryption/decryption) , that is why topic-starter was unable to decrypt the data with different bridge controller :))

@unknown

Yes I did. But no way to recover.

@Dr-Kiev

No

Why are there 2 different types of chips. -> Ive seen it now. One it Jmicron (bad PCB) and the other one is asmedia (good pcb)
I thought, that the number 4060-705094-001 is the right. its the same on the downside of the boards.

So, your drive is encrypted with Jmicron.
IMO, you have two options, one if you have a proper tool like (PC3K, MRT...etc) you will be able to decrypt the drive. Option two is to seek for a fully matched (bridgeboard) with matched Jmicron based.

Good luck

@unknown
Thank u for ur help. Ill have a look for another Donor board with the JMicron Controller.

Hello,
Many Time The 8 Legged Mosfet is the issue ,Try replacing those from new board and use original rom chip in your defective board ,Might be thats all that it takes

There is no need to replace the dual MOSFET power switch. It can simply be bridged with two wires.

If the OP wishes to do some simple troubleshooting, I can identify the voltage test points.

HI fzabkar,

for sure. Can u help me with it? How can i bridge the power switch.

I would start by measuring V1, V2 and +5V.

Why are there 2 different types of chips.

Why?
It is usually due to regional variations.
In some regions self encrypting devices are illegal so non self encrypting devices are marketed to stay within local laws.
For example the USA, EC, Russian, or the Middle Eastern markets.

+5v = 4,98 V
V1 = 11,95 V
V2 = 11,30 V

Re: How to recover WD Mybook Harddisk

September 10th, 2019, 16:24

If you really are measuring 11V and 12V, then there is something seriously wrong with the PCB or your measurement technique. I would have expected to see 3.3V and 1.2V.

What do you measure on your donor PCB?

Re: How to recover WD Mybook Harddisk

September 13th, 2019, 4:16

I used a new one now

+5v = 4,98 V
V1 = 0,781 V
V2 = 0,06 V

The PCB is getting very hot. ?!
